  • Whats best stock replacement exhaust 4 -2 special

I have a 79 special and need to replace the exhaust. Would like to stay as close looking, performing and sounding as my stock pieces. Do my stock pipes flow good, because I'm thinking they do??
Any info would be helpful Thanks Mike

From my expereince with my 4-1, i like the look better but I hate that I scrape them on right corners.

As I don't remem the firing order I can't remem which set has teh best scavenging effect, as those are the best to buy, in theory.

      Bad News about pipes!

      Hey Mike,

Well, you kinda don't have much of a choice anymore! We just found out that Jardine which had the nifty crossover spaghetti styled pipes have quit making them for the XS11 series! Same thing for ALL of their pipes, 4-1 as well as 4-2.

So...MAC is about the only choice out there within reasonable prices. There is a company in EURO but you're talking exhorbitant shipping and customs fees!!

Now, IF your headers are still in good shape, and it's just your mufflers that have rusted out, you have more options!! From the Harley fat boy slip ons, to a variety of slip ons from places like Mikes XS, JCW, Dennis Kirk, etc.!!

But if your headers are shot, then you can either hope to find some decent ones on Ebay, or get a set of MACS, they still make both 4-2 as well as 4-1 styles, with turn outs or cone shaped mufflers!

Most folks feel that the STOCK pipes provide the proper amount of back pressure to make the low end grunt really come thru on these machines with stock air box. The aftermarket pipes, specifically the 4-1's are designed to scavange better at the higher rpms, and move the power band up to the 4K+ range, but some folks have reported a bit of a loss of the low rpm grunt due to the lack of backpressure, YMMV!

I looked and looked all over for 4 into 2 pipes that would closely resemble my XS1100SG stock pipes but had no luck. Maybe I just didn't find the right place.

I ended up going with the 4 into 1 Jardine pipe since at least the pipes go straight under the engine the way I like and the muffler looks very close to the original type, just not 4 into 2 like I wanted.

I run MAC 4-2's and they do alright. Word of warning though: the kit didn't have the right brackets with it. Lucky for me, my father had some spare aluminum at the hanger and fab'd me a custom set, said if they ever start cracking he'll make me a steel set.
