  • Reassembly of petcocks

Need some help on this one. I'm cleaning the tank on my Special and have rebuilt/cleaned the petcocks. I read in one of the old threads not to paint the mounting flange where the petcocks go as it will cause leaks. Is it wise to just mount to bare metal and just the new O ring or use some type of sealant. I concerned about rust.

I just bought the kit to rebuild the petcocks on the Special. The shop where I bought them suggested I put a little petroleum jelly on the rubber O-rings to keep them pliable and to use NO sealant. I followed the advice, and I have had no problems. Just tighten the screws really good, and you should be OK. (I did replace the washers on the petcock mounting screws.)

AFAIK Phil, the mount attached to your tank is made of the same alloy that the petcocks are. You shouldn't have any rust problems there. I agree with frustrated about the petrol jelly/Vaseline. It will help your rubber rings to stay moist and also help keep the seal.

      I'm concerned about rust.
