  • 1982 Maxim Brake & Headlight bulbs?

    Hey all,

I got my XJ1100 last year and want to get brighter headlight and brake bulbs.

I believe that the headlight bulb is an H4, and that the brake base is an 1157.

    Am I right?

Thinking of getting this LED brake bulb:

any bulb with 1157 base will work,
      in the brake/tail light & the turn/marker
but not in the turn signal only.....single pole bulb

Now, those look a little pricey, Check MIKESXS.com

          Hey LCS,

If you check out the Brake Light and Turn Signal MOD tech tips, scrolling down from the MAIN FORUM PAGE, not just the link in the left column, then you'll find a link to another LED source, Superbrightleds.com, decent variety of bulbs and sizes, and brightnesses, and prices!

I don't know though, how the SBLED brand of HYPERBRIGHT LUXEON bulbs compare to the Ebay/Jam Strait brand of bulbs, because the Jam Strait web site doesn't list the actual Brightness/Lumens of their bulbs!?

Folks have gotten some 1157 LED bulbs from other sources and found them to actually be NOT as bright as the OEM bulbs!

The problem with the bulb sockets in the tail lights is that they are not aimed straight back in the housing, at least the XS11's with the dual bulb tail/brake lights assemblies are not! That's why I went with the LARGE 56 LED bulb array mounted inside the tail light reflector lens....see the tech tip for details! I have since mounted 2 more arrays with their original housings onto the back of my luggage rack, and they are MUCH BRIGHTER than the same array inside the OEM housing/reflector! They are the same size/shape as those on 18 wheeler truck trailers!

SUPERBRIGHTLEDS has a bunch of other combinations of bulbs, as well as separate bulb arrays attached to 1157 bulb bases via wires, but the bulb arrays are on a board so you can position them how you like! I know the XJ's housing is smaller, but haven't looked at the fiche lately to see if it uses 1 or 2 bulbs!? You might be able to fit one of the large ROUND multi bulb led arrays inside the housing? Lots of options!

NOW, as for the turn signals, beware that you will need to either put an extra load/resistor but that kind of defeats the purpose of using LEDs to free up amps/power! So...you will need to install an electronic type flasher unit, 2 prong, and you WILL LOOSE your self cancelling flasher function!! Your Choice! YMMV!

What can I say ... awesome!

Thank you for directing me there.

I figured there had to be a place on the site with something like that, but couldn't find it on my own.
