  • 140/80-17 tires?

Hey all, I've got a 79sf that needs new tires but it looks like a PO put a standard rear wheel on it because the tire that is on it now is a 17.
So I was hoping to go as wide as possible with new tires and from the search it looks like a 140 would fit but I can't find any 140/90-17's, anyone know if a 140/80-17 would work? I know that the 80 will be a little shorter overall but thats not a big deal because it was supposed to have a 16" wheel in the first place.

Second question, anyone run bridgestone battleax tires? they make em in the right size, assuming a 140/80 will work, and they look like a nice tire. They have a dual compound and are designed for sport/touring bikes.

Ok, just did a little reading on what all those numbers mean and it looks like the original 130/90-17 would have a sidewall height of 117mm and the 140/80-17 would be 112mm, so a total height change of a little less then 1/4", shouldn't be a big deal considering the stock 16 is 1" shorter right?

      tires

The only problem you might run into other than a clearance issue is that the 17" rim off a Standard is narrower than the 16" Special wheel. Tire might bulge out too much? Not sure. No problem running a 130/90/17 on these rims.

I have a 130/90/17 on mine. Could have went with a 140 but couldn't find one at a decent price. After I scored my tire off the bay for 18 bucks brand new I'm not going to argue. Even though after I bought it I did see a seller on ebay selling a 140/90/17 but I didn't need it. And now that auction is over but I'll check to see if he may have relisted it.

I know this is an 8 year old thread, but I'm going to be due for a new rear tire next year and I'm considering going to a 140/80-17 for my 78 Standard. I have a 130/90-17 now with what looks to be enough clearance for the extra width. Anyone ever run this tire? Would hate to drop all this time and money for it not to work, but if noone else has ever done it than I may give it a shot and report back.

What's the point of a tire that is 10mm(.39 inches) wider than the tire that is suppose to be there? It might rub the driveshaft tube and be harder to get the wheel in the hole. The extra width won't help in handling so why do it?

It can make a VERY big difference in the handling characteristics of the bike, so I'm not sure where you got the idea that 10mm won't make a difference. I moved from a 140 to a 150 on my Supermoto and it really helped the bike turn in more easily. I was told moving to a 160 would have created too steep a curvature in the tread pattern which would actually end up having negative effects, so I stuck with the 150 over the stock 140.

The 130 on my XS already looks like it has a very steep curvature of the tread pattern since it's mounted on such a narrow wheel, so I wasn't sure if moving to the 140 we be too much. I was curious if anyone had tried it and had any first hand experience because 10mm CAN make a big difference in handling. It can also give you a larger contact patch and the lower profile tire will have less flex. But, just because it can have a big impact doesn't mean that it will...or that it will be an impact in a positive direction. Figured with thousands of XS1100's out there someone has probably done this before.

Interesting, as with sport bikes, going with a narower tire is the way to go, not the other way around.

                  Hey there TooMany,

Here's a link to a section of my rebuild thread showing the swingarm, the lack of clearance between the sidewall and swingarm recess, and this is with a 140/90/16 tire, but will also add that I had already shimmed the tire a couple of mm's to the right with thick washers placed between the rim and the drive hub mounting.

                  http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...4&postcount=37

As you can see, I went ahead and cutout the recess of the swingarm and then rewelded it back on a few mm's further to the left to try to provide more clearance, my tire did still rub the sidewall occasionally!

And if you look over that thread further down, you'll see my comparisons of just different style of tires from the same manufacturer in the same size profile.

Using a lower sidewall height tire (80) vs. the 90 will probably reduce your speed capability, and may even raise your rpm's at a given speed due to the smaller circumference.

                  Good luck!

Yep. With this I agree. The XS does not have too much power for the narrower tire. The narrower tire turns in faster. The rim is narrow for the 130 tire. The 140 tire doesn't look wide these days. Many or most 140 wide tires will rub the swingarm. The only thing you gain is trouble.
