Hey guys,I found this site this winter and have been reading quite a bit.I had a 80 XS Special a few years ago and sold it.I loved that bike.Well to make a long story short,I found another one in an estate sale on Craigslist last fall. This bike had 588 original miles on it.It turns out the po bought it brand new in 1980.Put a few miles on it over the first couple years and then scared himself. So it hadn't been licensed since 1983.I got it for $400.It had surface rust on it and the tank was half full of 20 year old gas.But he had shut of the petcocks and run carbs out of gas.So I found a tank the same color with no rust or varnish inside on ebay. The tank cost $200.Anyway I got it running and am starting to go through it a little at a time.Sorry this is so long,I just thought some of you would find this amusing.Assoon as I figure out how to post pics I will post a couple.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

Welcome to the site.
That was definitely steal. Even if you have to tear it down to the bones and re-paint it. I know you will enjoy it. And become truely excessive. Once you discover that you'll never go wanting for more twist on the throttle grip, you'll be totally hooked like the rest of us.1980G Standard, Restored

Yea I couldn't believe it when I saw it on craigslist.I live in Washington State and the woman who was selling it lives in New York.It was her Uncles and when he passed she had to deal with his estate. And she did it from New York with the help of a freind here.So she basically wanted it gone.
I appreciate the warm welcome from you guys.I wish I found this site 5 years ago when I had my last XS.There is definitrly something about these bikes that gets a guy hooked.
I took the carbs off this bike this winter and totaly cleaned them and put in new gaskets and the carbs are like brand new inside, with no wear at all.I did have to take the brakes apart too and clean a bunch of grunge out and polish the caliper boers as the brakes didn't work.It runs smooth and the exhaust is actually in great shape too.I did put the bags on it and the windsheild.
It was 70 degrees here last weekend so I rode it 80 miles.
I can't wait till it gets nice again.80 SG XS1100
