  • Engine wouldn't shut off

I went for a ride yesterday and shut the bike off for about 15 minutes. When I started it again it sounded like the starter was turning on and off. I attempted to turn the engine off, and neither the the key or the kill switch had any effect. What could cause this? 1980 XS11G Thanks

If you are careful you can unsolder the wires and disassemble the solenoid. Then you can clean it and dress up the contacts, then reassemble with a little dielectric grease. Worked for me.

This problem is case by the connections in the ignition switch plug corroding and melting the plug to the point where the wires can touch and short out.

The fix is to replace the plug and coat the terminals with dielectric grease so it won't happen again.
