  • XJ Issues

    Hello all
I finally got around to attempting to solve an issue I posted last fall with my xj1100. the previous issue was fuel leaking while driving etc. After a long cold winter I just had the Carbs cleaned and reinstalled. The bike idles great now and no more fuel leaks but as soon as I accellerate I get to 2nd gear and the bike completely dies as if it were flooding or something. Then the bike won't start for a bit. The carbs were cleaned by someone else who has done this many times before so I can only assume they were cleaned properly as it does idle ok. Any suggestions on what to look for next would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like possible fuel starvation? Octy or petcocks not allowing enough fuel through to mantain proper level in carbs for running above idle? Try running the petcocks on prime to see if that makes a difference?

      Fuel lines

Maybe a kink in the fuel line. These Specials and XJS are bad about kinking the fuel lines when they have the octopus on them.
Look up under the tank by the petcock and see if you can see a kink. My 80SG was this way when i got it and i had to put a new fuel line on it. Also raise the tank real slow and see if it is bent.
      Thanks Tom

        xs dies

Hi Brazz, I also have the xj1100 beast and they are very cold blooded. Its best to give them at least a couple of minutes to warm up before taking off or they will die. Also hope you have a fuel filter on each of the lines to stop all the tank debris. I had the mesh filter inside the tank clogged when I first got my bike and its hard to see unless you pull off the whole petcock. Being petty, I ripped off the mesh on both petcocks figuring the fuel filters will stop future crud. I spent hours before that find....anyway, synch the carbs, maybe a can of seafoam, pray......good luck. Mike in san diego

The petcocks were removed and visually inspected. everything seemed clean. We are going to order the petcock rebuild kits and see what that does. Also the Octopus was inspected and also looked clean. I was able to run it up and down the street after we checked those. When I throttle hard it bogs down and die, but if I ease the throttle and some times rock it quickly I could get up to speed and shift. Alot of backfiring and some blue smoke at this point. So we'll rebuild the petcocks and see what happens. The fuel lines seem to be fine but not sure if I am missing something just by visual inspection.

          Thanks

            Brazz,
Still sounds like fuel starvation. Others will correct me if I'm wrong but running on prime bypasses octy and should provide full fuel flow to carbs. To test, remove primer fuel line from petcock or carb and turn to prime and should see full steady stream of fuel. If so rebuilding petcocks won't help, unless they are leaking.
Backfire if not ignition is lean fuel mix. Floats set to low? If so it would idle but stall and or backfire under full load.
Does it want to die out immediately on first crack of throttle or is there acceleration to start then die out......like running out of fuel.

Still a good possibility that carbs are still not cleaned good or floats not set right
Are your carb boots cracked and maybe vacumn leak? Did carbs get soaked in carb cleaner? That's a no-no will destroy throttle shaft seals- vacumn leak
            .
No guru here but hope others will chime in.

              Thanks
I do think the petcocks need a rebuild anyway. Yes it throttles up then dies down as if either running out of gas or flooding I suppose. Since my last thread I noticed the air line attached to I believe it is Carb 2 boot has broken. So I will have to replace that as well for now. I will keep posted on the progress. I appreciate everyones suggestions.

              Thanks

                Line to carb 2

There is the problem. The "air line" is actually a vacuum line and it is necessary for fuel to flow. The system has a vacuum control valve to stop the flow of fuel when the engine isn't running.

Yup, poor fuel flow AND vacuum leak=trouble.

Well, the issue was finally resolved. I had someone look at it and the cracked vaccume hose was a major part of the problem. It also was flooding the engine which was related to another leaking hose. Not sure what that one was, but he fixed both of those, replaced all the fluids and it runs like a charm. In the mean time I sold my beauty to my deserving nephew who now can take over the reigns and have loads of fun with it. I appreciate the past few years of knowledge given me on this site and I know he will certainly be perusing here as well.

                    Thanks
