  • Oil leak

I have a xs1100sh and it is leaking oil out of what I beleave is the drive shaft coupling rubber boot. I'm wondering if the is a common problem with a seal under the boot or is it just the boot that is leaking. It has a tear in it. Also I'm looking for a boot for it if you could point me in the right direction. Thanking you in advance for your help.

Not really a common problem, though it's been heard of once or twice.
Could be the output seal of the middle gear.
I haven't seen this on XS's, mostly Vulcans, but a bad seal on the final drive can allow gear lube to leak and creep forward up the drive shaft tube, dripping out the coupling boot.
Don't know what the general condition of the bike is...
Clean the area and try to determine exactly where it's coming from.
Both the middle drive and final drive take gear lube.

Did you just get this bike?
          Does it run?
If you've had it for a while, did this leak just start?
Just how bad of a leak is it?
Is it oil... or gear lube?

            oil leak

Making a statement ...it seems like the oil from the engine is leaking from the boot ..I just changed the oil and took it for a ride and there was oil every where! I just dont see any other place that it might be leaking?!?!

I found your earlier threads. Ok, you've had the bike for a while.

Might you have overfilled the engine?
Oil would then come up the crankcase breather hose into the airbox and drip down onto the final drive. Could this be it?
Anything else you did aside from draining the oil and replacing the filter?

                oil leak

I got it last year ...road it 185 miles and after rebuilding cards ,petcocks, replaceing carb rubbers, and having tank sealed.Changed oil and filter and then went for a ride. Found oil leaking on ground and it seems to be leaking out of the boot. Dry in frount of that?!?!?!

You need to clean the bike.
Clean the metal parts with Brakleen or something... get all the oil off. Put in on the centerstand, fire it up and watch it.

Final drive is full of gear lube. A leak from it would put gear lube on the boot.
You have a leak somewhere... an engine leak somewhere in front of the final drive and it's spraying back.
All you can do is clean it up and wait to see where it comes from.

                        Oil loss

Make sure you are checking the sight glass when the bike is on the center stand, not on the side stand.....

Could the middle drive have been installed by the PO without a gasket and leaking around it?

Those rubber boots are still available from Yamaha... but they aren't cheap. I just paid $54 for mine.

The rubber boot just helps keep the universal joint clean. If the drain hold in the bottom of the boot, or the tear, is actually leaking oil, it is probably middle gear oil. Check the middle gear oil whil the bike is on the centerstand. Leaks into the boot are probably due to a seal. I had that problem and replaced the middle gear unit.

Usually... but he is losing engine oil. You should be able to tell the difference between the two just by the smell of the oil. Any appreciable time spent in the middle drive will result in the "Burnt rear-end grease" smell.
