  • Ring Replacement

Before i start hackin into the bike again, i just had a few more questions for you all. First off the rings will need to be replaced this year. they are not bad right now but i can see a slight amount of blue smoke out the left side exhaust every once in a while. Is it possible to relace the rings in the bike without dropping the motor?. just to me it doesnt look like enough room to get the heads off.

If so how many of you has replaced the rings in your bikes, what was the cost, and what did it take to change them.

    Thanks once again.

Check your compression properly... engine warm, spark plugs out, throttle held wide open while you crank it. If the compression is high enough, it may be bad valve seals. Eaither way, you can do it all in bike if you want to... there's room.

        Hey Fritz,

Like Tod and MRO said, check Compression first! Secondly, how many miles on your machine?? Folks have had their machines go 100K miles!!!!

What's the history of the bike, have you had it for years?

With just the occasional puff of smoke, and otherwise good performance, hopefully good compression, mileage, etc., then most would say why bother fixing what isn't really broken!?

I've heard of rings getting stuck/frozen, but not sure whether it applies to the oil rings vs. the upper comp. rings?? What I'm getting at is that you might want to try putting some Mystery Marvel Oil into the oil just before you next oil change, run the engine in the center stand for 5-10 minutes WITHOUT any load, using a fan, and then drain and replace filter/oil! IT might help to loosen any varnish or such that might be holding the rings stuck, might get lucky??

          Re: Ring Replacement

Oh, you can get the heads off with the engine in the frame. If the smoke is after a cold start of when you let off the throttle, it could be due to a valve seal. Those are replace only when it is convenient...
