  • Idle issue?

I am hoping someone can throw their $.02 cents at this. I was out riding today, and I knew the low fuel light was due to come on. I came to a stop light, and the bike died. It restarted, but I had to apply a little throttle to keep her going. As long as I gave her a little gas when stopped or going slowly she ran just fine. Four blocks or so after the problem first arose the low fuel light came on. I switched to reserve and this did not help. I pulled into a gas station and filled her up. Turned the petcock back to "on", and the problem was gone. However, she now idles a little higher than she did. about 1400 vs 1100 on the bikes tach. Should I just adjust the idle, or is there an actual problem somewhere. I did not add stablizer to the fuel over the winter. I just started it about once a month, and then drained the tank and ran out the carbs in Febuary. The tack appears to be rust free, and coated with a black coating. She had been running great and besides the idle speed still is.

    Hey Dave,

Throw/pour some SeaFoam into the tank, and run it thru a tank ful, and see how it behaves. Once the SeaFoam has been run thru, and it still idles too high, then just adjust it!

When you were running low, you may have run low on one pair of carbs earlier than another pair until you got to reserve? Even then, there's not much fuel in the tank to PUSH the remaining fuel to the carbs, so they may still not have gotten refilled properly? Once you filled the tank, you have full gravity pressure and the carbs got refilled to their proper level.

Thanks T.C! I'll pick up some seafoam tomorrow.

Throw a small amount of gas drier in the tank. It sounds to me like you ran you tank low enough to pick up some water out of the bottom of the tank, maybe from the last time you washed it.

Although I doubt that there is water in the tank from the last time I washed it I think that you could be on to something as I do remember having the same problem with a car once. I did not make it out to buy seafoam today, but hopefully tomorrow I can pick-up both. Thanks!
