  • how much oil for a XJ1100?

I am doing an oil change on my 82 XJ1100 and was wondering how many liters it takes?.Do you fill it to the top of the sight glass? Also does the oil drain down to the filter bowel on its own, or should I add so much and run it for a couple of seconds and then top it up? It would really help if I had the total specs on this bike. Thanks again.

Just add 4 US quarts, and you'll be safe. I believe the capacity is stamped on the engine right below the oil fill hole isn't it? I just checked on my bike and the it says 3000cc's, so that's 3 litres, right? I just pour in 4 quarts, and go.

I agree with the 4 quarts as well.

I was curious, I changed my oil when I parked my bike for the cold winter months. I am changing it again as I am getting it ready for this season and the oil has sat for around 4 months.

Does everyone change the filter and drain the filter housing each time or can a person change that every other oil change. My manual says you can and states that I would need .5 quarts less to do the change. What is the general concensus on this procedure.

I change the filter every time...

I change the oil. I don't change the filter housing o-ring, though. I change the o-ring every other oil change. So far I have not had any leaks. Dang, I shouldn't have asid that...that sucker is sure to leak the next time I don't replace it. Oh well.

          oil change.

I change everything, every oil change, But I am a tad anal when it comes to oil changes. I even cut the oil filters open to see whats in them. As they say the devil's in the details. And don't forget to add extra oil if you have an oil cooler.

3000 CC is 3 liters (or 3.2 quarts)

You don't have to change the filter every time, but they're cheap; so why not? I usually dump 3 quarts in that start the bike for a minute or so. Shut it off, then, while on the center stand, check the level. I believe the distance from the bottom to top of the window is usually one quart. Add more oil to reach the center of the window. Changing the filter does require just a little less than half a quart.

I'm talking from experience from my other bikes because my XS probably hasn't been started since 1988. The crankcase is full of kerosene as I type.

But always check the condition of the bypass valve, filter cover threads and o-ring. After-market filters don't come with the o-ring, so I just reuse it if it looks good.

I think it must have been because I was feeling lazy after watching Nascar and not wanting to go that extra distance to replace the filter. I did change out the oil today and once the tools were out I went ahead and replaced the filter. Sure feels better after the fact knowing you did it complete.

Found out at Autozone if you buy 5 quarts and a filter it is only $.23 more that 4 quarts. At first I brought up 4 quarts and he showed me the add. Got an Oil filter for my truck and an extra quart of oil for the $.23. Same deal for the Synthetic.

Forgot to add that my 4 in 1 Mac sure makes oil changes messy as the oil has no other option than to pour onto the header since it is in the way.

Be sure you first drain the existing oil through the crankcase drain plug, not just by removing the filter cover. Some guys have added the normal 3.5 litres or so, without realizing they even had a crankcase drain plug, and ended up way overfull.
