reserve lighting bypass

Ok. I got a barn bike (found in a barn) Lots of wire problem
I restored a 1977 750 triple, I took out the reserve lighting unit.
I want to do the same with this bike is there a thred for this?

I feel like I fell asleep in class and missed something important. Why would any sane person want to remove the reserve lighting unit? Speaking as someone who has lost the gift of light at some bad times over the years this is something I would never do. or am I the only one here who rides in the dark?

Or do you just walk around in the dark about most things?
I see no reason to remove it, either. Came in handy once.

Hi guys,

I fitted a Euro-spec right-hand switch so that I can control the lights. I then added a power relay to get more power to the headlights, which confused the RLU.... so it had to go!

The reserve lighting unit switches from bright to dim if the bright goes out and from dim to bright if the dim goes out. I can do that with the dimmer switch.
They have other funtions too but I'm not sure what. All I know is that I don't need an overthought box to tell me my headlight is out.
The bug in the bike was gone after the rlu was removed.

It's my bet , that even with your hand near the switch, if your laid over in a corner when the lights go out you won't have time between realizing the light is out and hitting the switch to avoid a trip into the great unknown. Oh Well ! at lease you will have a bike to ride when you get there.

I had to re-wire one due to rodents.

I've got one of those right hand units too.
Is there an elect. schematic that shows it?
Can't find the switch on any schem. I've got.

Can hook it to the head light relay
(in-line between alt wire and relay)
or if you want the light to come on even with the engine off,
tap a 12V+ one end of switch and then to relay.

Roger that. The cable from the switch assembly dives into the main wiring harness down the bckbone. Like to know where it ends up. Bike came with the unit installed when I got it. Only thing that does not work is that light on/off switch.

Maby a good reason to remove.

Thank goodness I was only on a one day trip, because mine failed, 100 miles out in the dark. Causing a no headlight situation. The trip went into the night and thank goodness I was with good old dad, that lead the way home, from the east side of the state to get some sweet corn. I will never forget that ride.


My opinion is, if you can, remove it!!!

Did not know a Reserve Lighting Unit failure could keep the headlight from working. When the rodent(s) ate my wiring would not have found the RSU wiring on an SF was almost totally gone if they had not also eaten the wiring for a turn signal too. Rode around for a couple days before I got around to checking why the turn was not working and found almost all the wires into a connector to the RSU severed...

My head light indicator on the instrument cluster would flicker on and off, Bugged me real bad. After I removed rlu it quit. I have had zero problems with my lights. After installing a spade type fusebox I have had no electrical problems at all.

Unplug the reserve lighting unit and see what you get.
What is a RSU? Not that it really matters but just am wondering if you are meaning RLU. Or am I not understanding that the Reserve Lighting Unit is also a RSU? Not being a smart azz, just wondering if you are talking about something else .
