  • stuck clutch basket?

    Anyone ever have their clutch basket stuck on the shaft? I'm tring to do by 2nd gear and I can't get the basket off. I've been wiggling and twisting and pulling and pushing for like 2 hours. Any tips? It will move like 1/4 of an inch and then stops like its hung up on something. Well back to work while I wait for your responses.

    Did you pull the oil pump off??? I thought you didn't!! Oil pump NEEDS to be off first, IIRC.

      Yeah, I've got the oil pump off. Just the three bolts and then it drops off right, there isn't some other little part that I need to pull is there? I'm going back out to check that I didn't miss some little stupid snap ring or something.

        Still stuck, I can't see anything holding it on so I'm going to go and get a gear puller and see if I can pull it off. Not sure what else I can do. Its as if the thick spacer/bushing is stuck on the shaft and the clutch basket will only come half way off the spacer and then it gets stuck on the spacer.

          This one is bothering me and I can't figure out what may be holding it up, unless there's corrosion on the shaft. The oil pump doesn't need to be removed, but it's not hurting anything to do so. You should be able to just lean the bike on the sidestand, and you can take the clutch cover off and the basket without even draining your oil.

          Just for grins.... you did remove all 6 bolts, the star plate and springs, and the big retainer nut and washer from the basket... correct?

            Well I figured it out, the little brass inserts in the clutch basket some how bonded to the spacer ring. Check out the photos bellow to see what I mean. Also my "parts" clutch basket has two of the point broken off. Anyone think thats going to cause problems if I install it till I can get my hands on a good one?

                  Yeah, I thought it was a good Idea when I started lifting the bike but now that its up there I'm not exacatly sure how I'm going to get it down. those ratchet straps worked great for lifting it but the bummer is they only ratchet one way.... gona have to buy my buds a couple a beers to help me lift/lower it down.

                    Hey Psycho,

                    I don't know what Tod has said to you in the PM, he might have offered you a spare basket??

                    Just that there is a warning in the Clymer's about ensuring that the collar sleeve and the basket have the same markings, they are made in matched sets, and there are 2 different styles, and perhaps that's what might have happened to the PO and this one??

                    If you look at the GEAR side, the bottom of the basket, there is a mark lightly engraved into it, either 1 or 2 lines. Here's the quote from the manual!
                    If the primary Driven Gear/Clutch housing or spacer are to be replaced, they must be sized to each other. Each part is marked with either one or two lines. A primary drive with one line may be used with a spacer having either one ro two lines, BUT a primary drive marked with two lines must be used with a spacer having two lines!
                    The line markings on the spacer are on the END of the spacer, not on the friction surface!

                    As for the broken prongs on the basket. They keep the friction plates in place and transfer the power from the spinning basket to the central shaft via the steels and central clutch hub. I would think that with only 1 or two broken that it would still be okay since you have ALL of the other's in place to keep the frictions securely in the basket! YMMV!

                    The ratchet clamps I've used allow for a controlled release, you just have to position the handle almost to the full tightening position without ratcheting it, then allow the ratchet to grab, pull it just a little like you were going to make it tighter to release the tension on the securing ratchet mechanism, then pull/lift up on the locking racthet mechanism, this will allow you to then slowly release the tension about 1/3 rotation of the ratchet, then let the lock grab, pull the release lever on the tightening handle to allow you to reposition like the first step, and repeat, and you should be able to lower it safely and slowly!

                      Hi Psycho,

                      If your straps are less controllable, you should still be OK if you release one, then put it back with an inch or two of slack, then release another so that the "slack" one is under tension again. Put the second one back with a little slack,............

                      To work on the chassis of my bike, I usually hang it from the rafters (right way up!) and that is how I let it back down.

                      I will need to look for the straps TC uses!

                        Thanks for the ideas, I was just going to get a couple of buddys to help steady it and then release the straps. I don't think you can tell in the pictures but it isn't hanging compleatly the rear tire is still carring some weight. My original Idea was to use an electric winch that my dad uses for getting arcade games into his basement but It doesn't lock, so I would have needed the straps to hold it once I lifted it and it seemed more complicated then it needed to be.

                          Hey Alan,

                          I've gotten both the el cheap straps as well as one specifically made for bike strapping, and they both have the sliding locking mechanism which holds the drum that the strap is wrapped around in place, AND the tightening handle that has a sliding ratchet mechanism that grabs the cylinder and allows you to tighten it. IT's the first locking one that holds the cylinder in place when you Ratchet the HANDLE back around to grab further around the cylinder to rotate it again to tighten it more.

                          The tightening handle does have a raised cam type section that when you pull the handle around so far it releases and HOLDS the locking mechanism OUT so that the cylinder free spins and allows QUICK release of the strap.

                          But if you just reach in with your finger and lift up on the locking slide you can do a controlled release of the tension by reversing the tightening process.

                          SO..Psycho and Alan, your straps are probably just like mine, just that you may not have noticed or realized that you could do the slow release instead of the quick one!?

                            Just wanted to post a follow up, I've got it down but the clutch is not working... My straps did ratchet down as TC suggested.

                            A word of advice for anyone that is crazy like me and tries this, Make sure you have a second "safety" strap semi-loose on each side as your lowering it so that when you accidentally push the ratchet just a little to far and it releases (yes you will, even if your careful) all of a sudden you don't drop the bike on yourself.
