  • replacing coil wires

My spark plug \ coil cables are getting old and stiff. So what does it take to replace them. Do they connect to the coil like they do to the spark plug caps. That is just puch on. Where do get replacement cables?

I think it is time to replace them but have no idea what to do?

    thanks, Jeff

      Hey Jeff,

If you find doing surgery on your old coils a bit too much of a PITA, then you might want to look at this tech tip in the mods/electrical section for an inexpensive way to beef up your spark system!

        TC,

I've been having what I thought were carb problems, but I'll swear I've got them setup correctly. I think I might have coil problems. When I pulled the plugs and hit the starter I can watch all 4 of them spark, but a friend with a v-twin said his would do that too but it was still a bad coil.

My question is, are you still happy with the MikesXs coils? If you say the word I'll point and click!

        Thanks!

          Scott,

When I rebuilt my bike a year ago, I had gotten to the point where the engine sounded like it was idling VERY nicely and the tach was rock steady. It was, however, popping. THEN, I got a timing light as enough things were wrong on this poor neglected bike that I wanted to check the ignition timing. When I attached it, the tach function on my timing light was jumping all over the place. The root of my problem wasn't the coils, but the caps on the end of the wires that attach to the plugs themselves.

I could take the caps off the wire and test them with an ohm meter. I might get a good reading, then tap the cap and then it was open. At the same time, and using the tech tips, I tested my coils. One of them tested way out-of-range. I ended up replacing coils, wires and caps from MikesXS..

          2 17-6803 ignition coil-high output
2 23-2902 spark plug high tension wires
          4 23-3113 spark plug cap-NGK-LB05FP

Once done, my timing light tach was reading as steady as the bikes tach.

The MikesXS coils installed with a minimum of fuss. I have been very happy with them.

          Eric

BTW: The popping was from the gas build up on the engine cycles when the plug didn't fire. When the plug would finally fire a few cycles later, it would ignite all the extra the gas that had a chance to build up causing a pop. The more engine cycles the plug went without firing, the bigger the pop. I could also see the pops when I had the color tune plugs on. I would see a bright flash, then a moment later I would hear the "POP".

            Hey Scott,

Like Eric said, they are very good cost effective replacements, and have worked just fine. I have to admit that I don't do as much riding as others, it's not a daily ride, more for weekends and Rallies, but I think you'll notice the increased ease at how the engine starts and runs!
