  • front wheel question

i took the front tire off my 79 standard to balance to wheel. i got it all back together but on the side with the speedo drive and pinch nuts there is a little gap. the gap is between the speedo drive and fork.
should there be a gap there? i dont remember if there was one before. the speedo gear is in its grove and everything works fine/drives fine. i thought everything should be tight together but i cant get it tight together.

A gap is OK. Check to make sure that the clearance of the brake disc is equal on either side of the brake caliper, that's the only gauge you have!

If it's not, loosen the fork cap and move the fork leg in or out to adjust. That's all there is to it.

Oh, and you did torque the axle nut, right?

Make sure the rotor-to-caliper mount gap on the right fork is equal. It is adjusted by loosening the axle pinch boltand pulling/prying the fork tube away from the wheel to acheive the proper gap. The left side is non adjustable.

That is when you have a SPECIAL like John's stable!

But with your Standard, Randy's info is a bit more accurate since for some reason Yamaha put the axle on "Backwards" for the Standards vs. the Specials!
