  • Shopping lists for XS11 Projects

I was hoping to get some of you guys who've done these mods to chime in and post up a shopping list of what it took to get it done. These are a few of the projects I'd like to do on my bike. If possible, post up part numbers and even ebay listings if you can. I ride an 80 special with a 79 special engine.

Project #1 - Stainless Steel Brake lines
Project #2 - HID headlight replacement
Project #3 - Alternative carbs (the best bolt on and go option)
Project #4 - LED lamp replacements
Project #5 - Coils and wires upgrade (Accel)
Project #6 - Petcock rebuild kit
Project #7 - Fuse block repair kit (mine is one big crimped mess)

That's it for now. I've done some searching but didn't find everything I was looking for. These projects are in no particular order. Would probably do the cheapest ones first.

Thanks in advance. If the thread gets too big we may have to separate it out later by project so it's kind of a one-stop thread for each project.

    Hi Manshack,

You are looking at some of the most common mods done to XSs....... I doubt if there are many bikes which do not have at least some of 'em done.......

There is a HUGE amount already written on most of these; try a search before the thread becomes vast.

Everything you need is already on here.

AlanB, I've searched plenty but keep coming up with more questions than when I started. Mainly because I'm nowhere near any kind of bike shop to buy stuff from I'm stuck with ordering on the internet and I'm worried about buying the wrong stuff and getting stuck with it. Like on the brake lines for example. I read a thread that pointed out to HELusa's site but you get there and they don't have anything listed for an 80 special plus they weren't the same prices that were listed in the thread so I end up confused. I'll try to make some lists on my own and post them up for others to critique. I just don't like getting in the middle of a project and not having everything I need because each hiccup costs 3 or 4 days just waiting for parts. Hope you guys understand.

        I'll start from the bottom.
#7, Fuse Block------ Order one from TC Done!
#6, petcock rebuild kit---- Georgefix on ebay. Go to his store, as he has it all, and at good prices.
#5, Coils and wires---- MikesXS, a 650 site, has high performance coils for $35 each, and the wires for $4. Just tell him you have two 650's, as they don't like to sell parts to XS1100s.
#4, LED lamp replacement----- Some guys use them, mine keep dieing because of vibrations at high speeds I just went to Geezer and got a new reg/rec.
        #3,Carbs, No Ideas
        #2, HID light, No Ideas
#1, SS Brake line----- Measure your lines, and have new ones built. Most HD shops carry a line of SS with all the fittings. That is an easy second, as there are HD shops all over.

XS1100 SF Bob Jones worked on it!

Ray, thanks for that info. I had completely forgotten about MikesXS. I'm going on a test drive to nacogdoches tx this weekend where they have a small HD dealership. Might drop in for a quote. Looks like a PM to TC is in order also. For some reason Geezer isn't ringing any bells. I'm guessing it's a member on the site?

You forgot the electronic flasher you'll need to do the LED swap. I have been running all LED for a couple years with no probs. In fact one of my upcoming projects is to make a custom tail light panel to go in the stock brake light housing that will be huge, and have both flashing and solid extra lights that come on when I hit the brake. What I really wanted to do is have it say 'XS' in the diodes, but I don't know that you would be able to see it through the diffused lens.

Do a PM to Geezer. You will find him. The other way is do a search on rectifier or voltage regulator. Tony runs Oregon motorcycle parts, and builds regulators for old bikes. He IS a member, just not that active a poster.
His product should last as long as you can ride the bike. I DID manage to break one, but I'm a reliability engineer, and break things for a living. oregonmotorcycleparts.com/

Something like that... Anyway I've been too busy to ring bells or much less read the forum as often as I used to.

DR was talking about my VRR3 unit found here.

                    Hi Manshack,

There are a few recent threads on HID lights; they should be easy to trace.

I run GSXR "Slingshot" carbs, and I am VERY pleased with 'em...... but the recent hot news seems to be Kwak ZXR carbs; easier to find, easier to fit, easier to tune, and possible to join up to the original airbox. Try a look around; there are no "easy" answers to this one......... There can never be a "Bolt on and go" option.... any changes from stock carburetion will need some sorting out.

Ray seem to have dealt with most of the rest fairly elegantly.

Thanks for all the input guys. And thanks for putting up with me asking questions that have already been answered in some cases. I went looking for ZXR carbs but didn't seem to find any on ebay. I think if I fit new carbs I'd probably just go ahead and stick pods on it.

And thanks for the SS tip at mikes. Saves me an embarrasing trip to the HD dealer.
