  • Swingarm bearing regreasing

I searched, but could not find anything definite so far.

I am trying to pull the driveshaft off to get to the swingarm and grease the bearing, already have the final drive off but the Clymer book says to loosen the bolts under the boot. There 2 sets of bolts under there, the 6mm allen head bolts to the middle drive(red arrow) and 10mm regular bolts towards the rear side, (black arrow) Which bolts should I take out? The hex is hell to get to, and I can't loosen the regular bolts because the driveshaft moves along with it! Was I supposed to loosen the bolts while the final drive and tire were on there? Long question but it should be an easy short answer to someone who has done this before. Thanks in advance. Disregard the white arrows.

You'll want to remove the bolts that are marked by your black arrow. Those are the ones that connect to the rear driveshaft. If it just spins when you try to wrench on it, then put the bike into first gear to hold it in place.

        Hi mrfiznix,

You don't need to touch any of those bolts to pull the driveshaft or to remove the swing-arm.

The shaft is held into the UJ (the part held by the bolts marked with the black arrows!) by a clip. If the bevel is out, just pop the shaft out by either pulling it back with a slide-hammer, or by levering back against the end of the arm. Once it is out, the arm can be removed, leaving the joint attached to the gearbox.

it can be awkward to line up the UJ and the shaft for refitting, but it can be done if the boot is pushed back out of the way.

Don't forget to grease the big spline at the back of the driveshaft when reassembling it all; the grease fitting on the arm is useless!!

If you are trying to get the swing arm off and grease those bearings you do not have to go any farther than you have. If you are talking about the bearing in the middle gear housing behind the red arrows, that bearing should be self oiling.

When you are installing the swing arm, do not forget to use a feeler gauge to center it in the frame before you tighten up the bolts and like Alan said, grease up the splines at the end of the drive shaft while you have the final gear out.

Its not as hard as it seems....only about a two beer job.
