How difficult to install fuel gauge on 80 special?

I'm not a big believer in not knowing my fuel level until the red light comes on. And with all the adjustments I do I never really can figure out a good MPG estimate. I'd like to add a fuel gauge. Any ideas? I read a few posts using the search but they were mostly inconclusive unless I missed one. Thanks!

If you put a standard tank and tach on it, it would be easy. after that, I would say see if the standard fuel sending unit will fit the special tank. You then MAY be able to use an aftermarket fuel gauge.

Fuel gauge on standard is on the left side of tank, special is on the right. So the standart gauge in a special tank would be upside down, won't work. I guess you could cut out the area with the mounting hole on the standard and fab it into the left side of special tank.

        Hi Manshack,

The distance my bike will travel from "full" to "light on" is usually about the same. I reset the trip when I fill up, so it is never a surprise when the light comes on.

There is the a few miles until the tank goes to reserve, so I never find it a problem?
