  • VMAX cans on 79 stock headers...

Spent some time this winter and welded a set of VMAX cans onto my stock 79 XS headers. Hoping it will run well and sound good. They're adjustable for hp and pitch so I'll be playing with them all summer long. Hoping to put a LOT of miles on them this summer.

Will have pics posted this afternoon, now that they're mounted back on the bike. They required a small amount of modification (small sledge hammer here and there) to fit properly, but they look and sound great. They give the bike a sound all its own. I'll post an audio file later on today for you.

              Okay folks....drum roll pulleeeze!!!

              ................................

After careful consideration and discussion with SWMBO(Get rid of that nasty yellow, its AWFUL!!), I've decided that the yellow might be taking away from the blue, and therefore must be changed. SO, Next trip to Wally's I'll grab more Cobalt blue and tape/spray the covers to match the tank. As for the pipes, well....you pretty much gotta hear it to appreciate it. Rollin down the road it gives off a nice pretty purr, but roll into it and the pipes come to life, leaving even the most seasoned rider wondering just what the heck that was!

No audio as of yet, but SOON....MWAH...

                    Hi Hammerhead,

Nice cans, but those are not stock headers......

Doesn't stop it being a good job and a fine result!

I like the looks of the headlights too. They don't look much wider that the original headlight. Where did you get them? Does the alternator handle the added load (can you run both without running down the battery)?

                      Thanks,
                      Bob

Headlight actually came from a friend of mine who was saving it for his GSR 1200 crotch rocket...I liberated it from his collection of parts. I ran it the latter half of last summer until November with no issues. I was running a double headlight, extra running lights, LED turn signals, and had no problems at all. I have an LED package and neon lighting (800ma draw) for under the tank.

Far as the headers being stock, the friend I got the bike from said they were stock as far as he knew and he'd never changed them. SOOO...call em stock, right?

They sound awesome! Not obtrusive at all, rather quiet at idle, but when you roll into it, look out man!! They come to life and roar like a hungry gorilla. All I can think of is the sound used in the meat loaf song Bat out of Hell. That ROOOWWWERRRRRR sound used near the end of it. Very impressive. Going to try and make the XS East this year, I think those pipes should provide for lots of discussion...

Not be a downer, but your pipes are Mac's. I know you're aware they're not stock, but in case you were wondering what brand they are. I have to agree w/ SWMBO on the yellow...

Hmmmm....Mac pipes. It's good to know because I had no idea. How the heck can you tell just by LOOKING?

Some people were born talented, I guess. Me, I was born tale-ended. So I have Mac pipes, Vmax cans, GSR 1200 headlight, and many miscellaneous Walmart add-ons. Soon, I'll add the LED glow sticks under the tank, the LED turn package to replace those God-awful stock lights, and the LED brake light/plate light. Oh yeah.... ...and the black light up in the frame. I like lights...I'm a firefighter, what can I say? I have blue strobes I'm adding as well, but they take minimal power and only run when the tones go off. I'm changing the yellow to a blue thats 2 shades darker than the tank. I'll then overspray with the Cobalt Blue for the metallic changing effect and see how it looks. SWMBO thinks it'll be nicer. Also changing the yellow inside the rotors to a lighter blue. Guess it's going to be a black and blue bike for me. That's ok, I like blue. It's a work in progress. Just when I get happy with it, I'll tear it down and do it all again. This year it's paint, next year it's all mechanical. Thanks for the input, I do value all of your opinions and knowledge. This forum is the best thing to happen to me since I got the bike. I've learned so much here.

Best reason to do it in blue...

Personally like black, sold one standard (after I put 20+ thousand on it) cause it was silver/gray, and another standard that was MACHO maroon
