  • xs 1100 project

    Hey guys,

Newbie here! I just bought an xs 1100 project for $150!

No title, hard starter, and have to finesse each gear when shifting. I'm kind of impulsive, and the price was right.

Does anybody have any suggestions for the shifting problem?

Change ALL the fluids in the bike!!! Go to the MAIN page, xs11.com, and THEN go down the left side to the "Tech Tips". You should get all the information you need from there. You WILL need to pick up a manual for the bike. They are still available new, so don't bid to much on ebay for one.
These bikes ARE kind of particular about the shifting. it's something you learn quickly. Correct NEW oil in the engine, middle gear and final drive WILL help. Don't forget to grease the spline on the drive shaft! You will have to pull the rear wheel to do it, but I and most of the owners grease the spline every time we replace the tire. The grease fitting Yamaha put on the swing arm does NOT work.
    Welcome to the site!

      Typical...

Perfect! Changing the fluids is pretty typical with any restore, but I didn't know about the shifting...touchiness. I already saw a few manuals on ebay. If anybody has a scanner and some time, that would be a great thing to do for the forum. A few of the other forums I'm a part of have online manuals that members scanned and uploaded. I'll see if I can find a way to do that.

Are there any special tools needed for a rebuild?

I'm looking forward to posting pics and getting advice from all of the experts on here!!

        Manual

I ordered a PDF repair manual. If it looks good, I'll be happy to upload it or send it somebody with the rights to upload it.

Anything to help out other people...

Does anybody know of any salvage yards in central Texas? I'm in Austin, but also go to Houston to see my girlfriend all the time.

Welcome to the addiction! I am also in Austin. Have a coveted factory service manual if ya need some reference. Also have a carb-stix and can pull a stock airbox off in 6 minutes without cussing (much). There are some other XS11's in Austin, but I don't hear from them much. The Texas chapter has lotsa members that try to get together at least a couple times a year. Check out the rally section. There is a "Meeting of the Minds" event in June hosted by the venerable Guru John and his lovely and talented wife, Kat.
