  • Initial check in

I live in the LA CA area and this is my first post. Just checking in. I am the original owner of a 1980 XS1100G which I bought in Omaha Neb. Today, after moving back for living in Argentina and Taiwan, I replaced the battery and prayed for it to start. it did after some grunting and spitting out trash from the twin exhaust pipes. I added some carb cleaner, fresh premium fuel, resynched the carbs, reset the chain tensioner, changed the oil and middle case oil, did some polishing and off I rode. it was running a little rough at low speeds but I got on an interstate and ran her hard for about 5 miles. It blew it out and smoothed out the motor. I had forgotten how much acceleration it had. I currently also have a 96 Royal Star and a 2002 VStar 1100 Classic. All are great bikes but I enjoyed riding the XS1100 today. Brought back memories of my grown son and I doing 10 day biking and camping trips in the summer time.
I was amazed the bike would start much less run strong after setting so long. I am looking forward to talking with many of you for info.

    Welcome

    Hi Dave,

Turbo-Dave hmmm ....you haven't done that to the XS some time in the past have you ?

Good to hear the old beasties up and running easily. Mine has been off the road for a while too, - so I had the same smiles as you late last year as it ran properly for the first time in a while. You forget the acceleration on tap after not riding one don't you.

I had to blow the engine clear too before she would run cleanly, although with an illegal bike on a test ride (no tax and other niceties) I did feel a bit exposed after a police car followed me for a while, so I trundled home.

Front end apart now (fork seals) - so come the spring I should be on the road proper - and maybe even legally!!

Don't want to sound like a kill-joy - but check those brakes aren't binding up - that your brake hoses are in good condidtion and of course if the rubber in the tires isn't perished and hard.

You may remember what a handful (and what fun) an XS can be on a fast twisty road - best not to try it first with rubber that doesn't grip and brakes that fail when they're really needed. Here endeth the boring sermon bit

Have a ball on the XS

      Welcome aboard!

Hey Dave, welcome to the group. Glad to hear your back on the road with the XS.
Wow, original owner! That is cool, there are, AFAIK, only a few originals here on the list.
Looking forward to reading your posts.

        Check in

Hi guys, I've finally decided to get on the board after lurking and reading everything I could about my 79 SF. I'm a Honda guy going all the way back to the mid 60's. Always admired the XS and finally did it in Dec. I'm doing the tank and octopus thing before I even get on the road. Still other minor things also such as leaks and seals. I am really looking forward to riding this thing and enjoy the site tremendously. I'm in the San Bernardino/Riverside area.
