    here we go again

cleaned carbs, overdid it with the octy - it seeping & makes me wonder if I put the thing together alright since I couldn't find any assembly diagram.

Still running on 3, I suspect #2 is down now(1-2-beat-3), didn't put the mufflers back in, it makes what I guess is a backfiring sharp explosion.

Reading about that octy, it looks as if it belongs in a better place (trash), anybody that has either info on rebuilding or bypassing it on an xj11?

Do a search on the octy, and you should find the diagram that TC did. It will show how to trash it, but you WILL have to shut the fuel off when you park. It does sound to me as if the float level may be off, and the carbs need to be synchronized. Carb sync. is one of the IMPORTANT parts of working on them!

If your float valves are working fine, you don't even have to shut off your petcocks, but it is good insurance.

For a while, I ran mine from the left petcock to the left 2 carbs, but it has to make a tight bend doing that and kept kinking the line. So the trick is to run the left petcock to the right 2 carbs and vice versa. It makes a nice gradual loop that way. The way I have mine, is just to get a couple rubber caps and cap off the front brass nipples on the petcocks. Those are for the "Prime" setting on the petcocks and really aren't needed. Then run a hose from the rear petcock nipple to the "T" fitting on the opposite set of carbs. Throw an inline filter on each line while you're at it. Cheap insurance. Then stand back and look at how clean everything looks with the octy gone!

I did that on my bike, the cross over left to right and such, works great. Since my petcocks leak I added in some cut off valves also.

          thanx read that around too

so I guess the octy-pissy isn't a novelty - does it have anything to do with these bike been prone to fire?

btw I couln't find the diagram of the diaphragm assy & still couldn't figure out how to replace it (from petcock kit)

more research & back to the plumber ware...

will post a video of today's test in case a mozart wants to give it's interpretation of "the thing"

I sure as &*ll hope not. I'm running the OEM fuel system on my specials. Most likely because people fail to check/maintain em.
Rubber hoses do need to be replaced now and then even when they may look good on the out side.

Have I been in the dark somewhere? I've never heard of this? Not scared and won't change anything, but I have never heard of someone's catching fire...

I am looking inside the diaphragm, wondering if I got the membranes a quarter turn off, maybe the spring on the wrong side (opposite the intake)...

I have newer membranes from the petcock kit but I couldn't get to take the plastic spacer from the old assembly out, and it looks like it's time

also I notice that if the metal housings are symmetric, the membranes would align with small nipples - assymetric - and the plastic spacer has a diagonal indent on one side, much like a breather hole

Should have taken pictures... I know
still how do you get the membranes out?

Bought a rebuild kit for the octy from parts and more and was able to fix mine from leaking. I had a fuel line break on me while cruising down the freeway. I guess I was lucky I didn't catch on fire. My pants leg an most of the side of the bike including the exhaust was soaked with gas. I check the fuel lines more often now.

                      octo POS

My octy didn't leak but it was restricting my fuel. I got rid of it after it left me hanging on a road in the middle of nowhere. I stripped it off on the side of the road and that was the end of it. Runs great without it. Full flow of gas.
