  • Thinking about making my SF a bagger ...

having recently wrecked it about six weeks ago. (destroyed the right side pipes, tank, headlight and T. sigs, guages, case saver, bars, right side driver foot rest, master cyl and on and on. ) Picked it up and rode it 30 miles home ....

I'm fine, separated shoulder and some sore ribs for a few weeks ... no real blood or broken bones. My gear did it's job well including the Motoboss armored mesh jacket and my KBC VR2 full face helmet which, when my head CRACKED down on the asphalt, I remember thinkin' ..."that didn't even hurt" as I was tumbling down the street like some such f'in' rag doll. Planedick was right behind me and I'm damn sure glad cuz he thought quick and clear to handle the traffic, bike etc ... probably scared him worse than me ... anyway ...

Even though I already have everything I need to put it back perfect, I'm thnkin about making this SF into a bagger cuz the stance of the bike seems to fit my short stature better than my Standards somehow. I have the luggage and fairing in this pic and factory SF exhaust.

What I'm wondering is: If the shorter, more up-turned SF pipes and hot exhaust gas are gonna' fry the bottom of the bags through or around the metal plate at the bottom of the bag bracket??? I have loosely bolted the pipes on so I know they'll fit OK. Anyone ever try this and what happened? [IMG][/IMG]

        Hi Wiz,
great that you survived with comparatively little damage to yourself. (if you heard your helmet crack onto the street you know it's toast, right?)
About perhaps frying your bags, my aging memory hints at a string a while back concerning that. What I suggested then was that if the bags start to cook from the mufflers being too close underneath, bolt a 22ga or so polished aluminum plate on 3/8" spacers under each bag to reflect the heat away.

Hey Wiz, the shorter pipes will work just fine with it fully bagged. 81 Special and Standard used the same pipes on both models and there seemed to be no problem on my 81Venturer1100(least not for the past 27yrs.)

The SF with the bags is another one
Been thinking of putting them onto the Merriam SF which is my daily ride. Other is very nice but can only ride one at a time

Thx, Fred and Moto .... I was hopin' it would be OK to go ahead with those bags .... and thx, Fred, for a 'Plan B' just in case.

Oh yeah, baby, the helmet is toast alright ... fibergalss though so it didn't crack visibly .... just a bad, BAD case of road rash on it ... looks like it spent some time in the .... uhhh .... bench grinder .... better it than me, eh? I bought another one EXACTLY like it before I rode again too. So far in my life, I'd have to say that that skid lid was simply the best 200 bucks I've ever spent.

                  special pipes under bags.

The pipes on my bike are off a Special, and I haven't had any problems with the underside of the bags getting hot. When I first put them on I worried about that problem, it never happened. I also like that I don't have to carry that weird contraption to remove the rear wheel anymore.

If that's the setup you picked up it's a sure nice deal. I guess I'm gonna have to come down to look at that!!!!! I'll see if I can find those bar end weights and offset things too....

                          Been looking

Even got into cleaning the garage, but I haven't found either the barend weights or the handlebar offsets. Might come down Sunday anyway.
