  • Carb trouble

I just bought a 79 xs11 special and rebuilt the carbs. The bike came with 4-1 exhaust and I have put on separate air filters. Well, the bike didn't run worth a darn after that (with the stock jetting and springs and float level), it wouldn't take any throttle, and was back firing quite a bit. From what I've read this is do to a lean condition, so I pulled them off, raised the floats about 0.020, stretched the springs 1 inch, set the jet needle to the richest position, put in a set of 150 jets on the outside cyclinders and 152.5 on the 2 inside, and richened the idle mix. Things have only gotten marginally better, they have not been synched yet, need to get it running goog enough to get it to the shop. Just wondering what combos other people have used with setup like this, I was hoping to avoid having to buy a jet kit since I just sprung for 4 rebuild kits!!!
    Thanks for any help.

Check out Denny Zander's Jetting Recommendations in the Modifications/Carburetors section of XS11.COM Tech Tips.

If you only have to buy a set of main jets it won't cost you too much. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

      your carbs

I don't know for sure, but I have the same machine, and at 137.5, I had the only "diesel XS11", in the world! Are you sure you are not drowning the engine, and maybe, the coil pick up wire is broken down under the left cover, and "masking" the real problem? The early carbs, could hold that amount of rejetting with the mods you mentioned, but the later carbs, and the factory, detuning of the advance, could be the problem, combined with the "wire" problem. I went through the same course of action, and am happy I still have xs11 "friends" who talk to me,.. after riding behind me! FFT
