    Hey "dude",

The more common problem folks have with their XS's is that can develop the skipping OUT of gear once engaged and trying to take off, accellerate!

I remember a fellow saying that his B-I-L or just friend was revving his bike on the center stand and it jumped INTO gear, took off and broke some parts in the process!

Have you been able to ride the bike? How does it shift otherwise? Do you have any trouble downshifting, like you depress the shift lever and it downshifts once, but then when you try to downshift another gear it will act like the lever can't grab!? This cause is from the shift lever return spring getting weak and not returning the shift lever back UP to reset the shift pawl to be able to grab another peg on the shift drum.

THe reason why I'm asking about this is just wondering if the return spring might be so worn that the weight of the lever pushing down against a weak spring might push/rotate the shift drum enough to sneak 1st over on the shaft to "jump" into engagement??

Or....you might have a bent shift fork which is pushing the 1st gear(actually I think it's the 4th gear wheel that slides to engage with the 1st gear) too close!?

If you go to the tech tips scrolling down from the main forum page, you'll find in the Repairs, Tranny section a very good pictorial of the return spring replacement process!

Perhaps others will now chime in with other theories and such!

I would think about getting a new shift return spring (or whatever it is called).

My first bike shifted into gear on its own at a stop sign. It was a CX 500 turbo. Was sitting at the stop sign both feet on ground reving it up for a friend. it popped into gear I rode it half way across the road looking strait up and finnallyditched it because I couldn't put it back down. Scared the living (&*&%* out of me. luckly I had time to get up before any traffic came.

Sounds like you might still have one or two more trips into the carbs! The phrase "Triple Clean" isn't just a slogan to MANY folks that are NEW to the XS11's and their carbs. Veterans can accomplish a proper cleaning on the first try!

Warmed up, throttle and dies, could be very lean? Lots of things to check with the carbs: slides working/ not stuck. What mods to intake(Pod filters/drilled air box) and Exhaust-stock/aftermarket 4-2 or 4-1's?? What jets are in it? How did you clean the carbs? Did you take them completely aparts, ALL jets out, central main jet NEEDLE/Emulsion tube out from inside of carb, ensured all small aeration holes in jets clear-open?

Did you soak the carbs=could be vacuum leaks around butterfly shafts!
