  • 1980 XS1100 Signal Lights

I have the XS1100 with the round guages and the stepped seat.
XS 1100 Special was on the side covers.

One of the rear signal lights is now hanging down. I tried to put it back in place. It just falls.

Do I need to replace those round rings?
What is the solution? Is this common?

Below is a link to the illustrated parts breakdown. Perhaps by studying it you can figure out what broke.

      Hi Miklos,
Take the other side apart to see what's broken or missing on the one that falls back down when you put it back in.
The XS11 rear signals mount in a rubber insert in the frame that has a big steel dished washer on each side of it. If those are missing they will need to be replaced.
If the threaded sleeve that the lamp wire feeds through is busted off short you do not necessarily have to replace the lamp body casting because the sleeve threads out of there and can be replaced. Don't forget to check if the grounding wire that ends in a big washer that goes under the retaining nut is still there. If the flasher lamp isn't grounded it won't work.

        turn signal

I've broke my rear turn signal and just put large washer on outside of frame instead of using rubber spacer. Works fine just no flex anymore. Liked it so much, did the other one that way too. HTH.

Maybe the nut just came off. If the wires are still connected, the nut, lock washer and large fender washer should still be there since they thread onto the positive wire before you connect them.

            Light setup

Thanks for the help. I found the image at:
            http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/partim...44&i=30269,4,0

I'll need to take out the light to see the problem but I'm going to do that large outside washer trick so it won't happen again.

BTW, is it normal for the shifter to sometimes cause a loud clunk when going into second gear?
I've heard my clutch might be glazed or something. But it only happens with second gear.

              a loud clunk when

Not unusual. I get a "clunk" now and then thru 3rd.
There can be "issues" with first and second and once in awhile a shift drum or fork problem but if it's not popping outa gear on it's own I'd just ride...

put second gear in search and be prepaired for some reading

I can't remember the Xact quote, but something like it SHIFTS like a russian Tractor, and has almost as much pull!

But it sounds like your shifting technique may need a little modification? What rpm are you shifting from 1st to 2nd in? The XS11 tranny IS very clunky, but adjustments in blipping the throttle and clutching can make it much smoother, but will still provide a nice clunk! Had a friend riding behind me one time, and he thought he was going to see tranny parts falling out behind me from all the noises!

                    XS noisy

                    1. I tried to install a large washer for the signal lite...but three is a groove at the end of the light...............I would need to grind it off or drill out the washer...........it was easier to put it back the way Yamaha designed it. They could have made the hole bigger to get at the nut.

                    2. I shift into 2nd anywhere from 1500 to 2000 rpm. Sometimes it is smooth but normally clunky.

I don't have any photos online right now

                      Hi TC,
my line was, "It shifts like a Russian tractor but it goes like sh1t off a red hot shovel."
BTW, MikesXS sells replacement Yamaha turn signals, as does Dennis Kirk.
