  • Front fork mod

Anyone out there ever successfully install a different/newer front end from a different bike onto their XS11 Standard?

I am having just one helluva time fixing my front forks and was wondering if I'm going to change both forks perhaps something completely different and newer would work.

Chopper, I remember you saying something about doing this recently but can't remember what your comment was.

    Just wondering.

    Thanks

hi wayne, yip your right i posted about this before.check the lengths of the fork legs(top to spindle centres)till you get a match within 1/2" or so.most large yams share the same headstock bearings, therefore the stems(triple trees) are same diameters(lengths may vary) so all you should need at most is to fabricate a longer or shorter stem(or maybe press the xs stem into new trees?).that would mount the font end.next wheels as you know xs's are 19" front wheels, most sport bikes 17".you can fit a xs front wheel into a later front end but not without problems discs will bolt straight on if they are six bolt mounts similar to xs.but hub(disc mounting face to mounting face) is narrower on xs(i think) this is easily solved by machining spacers to space the discs out (divide difference in hub widths by two for spacer widths) you also may have to change bearings in the xs wheel to match new spindle.if spindle is same dia as xs keep xs bearings and speedo drive(speedo will read slightly out if you use the new speedo drive) you have one more task, mounting the xs front fender most sporty (modern) bikes have a brace of sorts you can trim or remove the side mounts and hang the fender from the brace.handle bar mounts will most likely need fitted to top tree(aftermarket kits or universal risers or make your own?)then you have a good handling, front end with floating discs,4 or 6piston brakes. any other questions feel free to ask here,pm,or mail me.cheers

"Indy" Rick Jemison had a fork project for one of his XS11s. He picked up a complete GSX-R front end (fork legs and triple trees) and was planning on adapting it. I don't know how far he got with it. AFAIK, GSX-Rs have either 18" (very early) or 17" wheels, so it might be tricky to use the stock XS wheel.

What kind of problems... fork seals, head bearings, or???

Wow Chopper, I might have to get with your on some of those suggestions as some sound like the work might be out of my league. Thanks man.

Bill, My problem is that I have replaced the fork seals 2 times in one year and they still leak. I believe the fork lowers are just too scored and have gouges in them that are too deep. I'm tired of tearing into them. I'm sure another option would be to find used/good standard lowers so I am looking for some.

Just wanted to see if there was another option that would give me a more up-to-date breaks, wheel and forks on my front end.

wayne,if you need any help just holler mate.about your seals xs seals are37x49x9.5mm 1983-89 suzuki gsx 750 efe/efg/esd/ese/esg run a 37x50x11mm seal this would allow you to remove the scratches possibly if you open out the forks from 49mm to 50mm,the 1.5mm height difference doesnt matter.you may just find a wider 37mm seal if you ask around if the marks are deeper.hope this helps

            Wayne and Mick,

If I understand correctly you are talking about the scarring on the tubes that go into the seals on the forks, right? I have an XJ and have a whole bunch of rust pits on the fork tubes. I haven't put the bike on the road yet and was concerned if the pits might cause the seals to leak. Will they? How hard is it to rebuild the front end? Is there anyway to remedy this situation without rebuilding the front end?

Are there any inexpensive replacement tubes in Scotland for the XJ, Mick? Are there any parts that I could pick up while there in May?

              SQUID

I have used "carb cleaner" on the fork rubbers when in desparation mode, and it softened the seals enough to seal! Mind you they were not "new" seals, but it worked, for many many leak free miles! JFFT

                You could try these people:

I've not dealt with them personally but I have heard good things about them. Mind you, I don't think they're in Scotland.
