  • It runs.... sort of.

I fired up the new 1179 motor today. As suspected, I think I'll have to tear into it again. I thought maybe the crank bearings would be OK and that it was just piston slap with the way I had it before, but it has a funky vibration at certain RPM and I can hear just a little bit of a knock. So I will get this other motor all set to go on the bottom end with new bearings and such and swap the top end over. I will ride it in the mean time though easy for a bit.

I went to the car wash to hose it off and get some gas and go home.... only I didn't go home. lol. I rode @ 30 miles and it seems to be OK. Maybe a little exhaust leak, but that's to be expected after a new put-together. I'll tighten everything up again like the head and exhaust bolts in the morning. It seems to do 65 and 70 OK. I didn't want to go much more than 4k rpm for now, and it's @ 4200 at 70. Gas mileage seems to be about the same as it was... maybe it'll get better.

I'm going to John and Kat's this weekend, so we'll see how the gas mileage goes. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow... not sure I like the paint scheme on the motor.

Also, you can get a "knock" sound generally after engine warmed up and easiest heard above 4000 RPM. Has to do with timing and the fuel we have. There is a tech bullinten on the Yamaha site reffering to this.
