  • how far on does the clutch basket go?

I am doing the gear repair and now I'm putting everything back together. When I push the clutch basket on, it still looks like it should go a little further. I can see that it's not quite flush. I've been wiggling and turning the tire and the vacuume advance nut to try to get everything to mesh but no luck. Does it end up flush where the lock tab, washer and nut go? If so, what's the rtrick?

It is a little tricky sometimes. There's a spacer in the center that gets out of line sometimes. Unless you put an extra steel plate in the clutch basket, the outer face of the clutch basket should fit flush. Keep trying... you'll get it. It just takes some wiggling and the need to take it off and re-align that center spacer again. Also check to make sure none of the discs came out of their grooves on the basket.

Aside from the spacer?, there's a thrust washer inside the basket, under the clutch boss down inside the basket, and will slide around and bind. This is why it's suggested to put one or two of the springs and bolts that secure the star plate in place to help keep pressure against that thrust washer and the friction and steels plates in position while you attempt to slide the basket onto the clutch shaft. Also, you can feel around behind the basket to ensure that it's not binding on the oil pump drive gear.

Thanks guys. I think I have the refrenced washers in the correct location. I was pretty carefull when taking it apart so I could get it right the firts time.
Everything goes on smoothly but it just doesn't seem to be seating all the way. I'm going back to it noiw.
