  • Tank Emblem Interchange

Can anyone here tell me what the difference might be between the tank emblems on a XS1100SG and a XS1100LG? My XS1100SG has gold emblems.

Oddly enough, whan Yamaha built the Black and Gold Midnight, they put chrome finish emblems on it. Everything else, with chrome trim, came with gold finish emblems. This is like the way they put round signals on the standards with a square headlight, and square signals on Specials with round headlights.

That is something I'd be interested to see. On the Yamaha parts site there is no parts list for the image of the SG tank. The LG is listed as is the SF. Are they all different?

On the MNS models that I have seen, the tank and side cover emblems were chrome. I have some MNS emblems on my tank, and they are chrome. The regular Specials had the gold emblems.

Oops, you've caught me out there, MRO. In fact, Yamaha put round mirrors on a standard with square headlights and square signals. And, they put square mirrors on the Special with a round headlight and round signals. That's one of the things that has always puzzled me.

Sorry for the confusion. I knew there was something weird there, but winter has been so long here in the frozen north I'm starting to forget what the bikes look like.

Do any of you have the YAMAHA part number for the gold emblems on the SG?

                  I like gold!

Speed & Sport has them for $87.50 each. The silver ones are $2.81 from other sources.

                    Heedless of expense - - -

$87.50? EACH???? Just so yer tank badge has gold letters instead of silver ones? Rather than spending the cost of one good tire or two mediocre tires on steenkin' badges, try this:- Yellow tinted sunglasses. Wear them and the yellow lines in the middle of the road appear to be white while the white lines at the sides of the road look yellow. Betcha the $2.81 silver badges would look like they were the $87.50 gold badges once you put the yellow shades on.

Not to worry, Fred. At $175.00, my emblems are just fine the way they are. BTW, shrunken metal ones are available from Badge Replicas "down under".

Isn't there a thread here on how to paint the silver emblems gold or am I dreaming again. If not, the basic process would be to clean the emblem thoroughly (SWMBO's diswasher does a good job, just put them in the utensil tray so they don't go flying around under pressure).

Then rough up the chrome finish abit (320 grit or better so you don't see the scratches.

Apply a coat or two of gold paint to the whole emblem. Let it dry.

Here's where the contraversy starts. I prefer to put a thin coat of vaseline on the surface I want to remain gold ( I know I am opening myself up to Prom here, but...). Be careful not to put it down on the outlines that you want to keep black. Put a coat or two of black over it. Let it dry (like that's not obvious) and then do the dishwasher thing again (or Dawn and a scrub brush in the sink).

Some people would suggest painting the black over the gold and removing the black with a light coat of thinner on a rag, I find that I end up removing gold as well with that method.
