  • what to buy?

I have an 80SG and need to buy some items. I need help on ordering the correct items for my bike (model #'s, etc; and best sources.

    1. Front and rear tires (looking at Dunlop Elite III which I'll buy at a local bike shop, and have them mount and balance) sizes?

    2. Wheel bearings (kits?) for both wheels.
    sizes? model #'s, source?

    3. Brake pads (front and rear)...
    model #'s?, source?

    THANKS!!

      Hey Keith,

Several sources are available for brake pads and most of the bearings. Partsnmore, BikeBandit to name a few. Zanottimotors is a Yamaha Dealer, but provides good prices, has online quotes/searches available as well.

While you're there, you will need to look up the large bearing for the rear because it's only available from Yamaha....by design??

I've seen some posts about being able to use standard bearings from bearing suppliers for most of the bearings, and they provided the Generic #'s, doing a search for front or rear wheel bearings might reveal them!?

Remember, the front pads on the 80SG are the funky slanted type and require special left and right side fitting, whereas the ones for the rear are the flat style fitting all XS's except the 81MNS where they went to the XJ style!

Remember, on the Dunlop Elite III's that you want the Bias ply style, not the Radial style=won't work with our old style rims!!!
You can go up to a 110/90 on the front with room, but not sure about being able to use the 140/90=MU90 size vs. the OEM size of 130/90=MT90. I put a Dunlop Elite II 140/90=MU90-16 on mine, but the raised white lettering rubbed on the swingarm driveshaft side!

        Hi Keith,
the front wheel is identical to the XS650 front wheel. MikesXS is a great source for XS650 parts and lists the front wheel bearings at a reasonable cost.

One little trick to getting a 140/90 16 on the rear is to remove the drive cog that bolt to the rim and put 5mm worth of washer to space the cog outward. Then offset the swing arm pivots by 5mm to center the wheel back. When I use to ride a Special (before I saw the light!), this was the hot setup.
