i have got and yamaha 1100 maxim import in england how can i tell if it is a xj or xs and when i start the bike the red warning light flshes until i press the small button on the clocks. many thanks jeff..

The red warning light can flash for a variety of reasons. (The XJ has an LCD display which none of the XS models have.)

One of the more common reasons the light flashes deals with the battery. The original XJ battery has a fluid level sensor, and if a replecement battery is used without a sensor the red light will flash. However, none of the other LCD indicator lights will be on. If another indicator is on (other than fuel in the lower-right part of the screen) the red light can be tied to other issues, such as low brake fluid in either the front or rear master cylinders, or low oil level. Any other information you can supply would be helpfull in suggesting some troubleshooting info.

There is a work-around to the battery sensor problem; add a resistor in-line and the system thinks the sensor is there. Link is:

Exact value of resistor is does not seem to matter; a 2200 (2.2K ohm) resistor works just as well as the 2K unit I mention. Fix is quick and fast, cheap, and eliminates the flashing red light if you use a non-sensor battery in your XJ.

even if the light don't flash if the sidestand is down, the trail of sparks on lefties should give you the hint.
