  • Help with my XJ1100 Needed

    Hi,

I have a 1982 XJ1100 and I need help location vendors for the following:

    a) Locate a pair of Black KerKer 4 - 2 Exhaust Pipes

    b) Does anyone know what vendor I can go to to get Fancy Chrome design rims for this type of Vintage bike?

    c) This bike has the original handle bars and I'm looking to get a different design handlebars where should I start to look?

Any help or direction you can provide will be greatly appreciated....

Could be hard to find Kirker 4/2 new, Might keep an eye one eBay for a set.

Mac is available new, but in chrome..ckick link

As far as chrome rims, will need to get it done yourself.
Have not heard of anyone selling em.

Might use the forum search feature to see if any info available on XJ handle bars.

Rear wheel options are limited due to the shaft drive. In fact, I know of no off-the-shelf custom wheels for the XJ or XS. However, a few people have adapted other wheels. How much custom work do you want to do?

Handlebar options are also limited due to the square tube design used on the XJ. None of the XS models use square tube handlebars. However....

The square tubes mount to the tripple-T through an adapter. It is possilbe, I have been told, to change the XJ's square tube mounts for the XS round tube mounts. If you care to do this, do a search on "replacement handlebars" and quite a few threads will come up.

Note that the XJ controls are a bit different than the XS. The 4-way flasher switch was moved to the right control and the left control includes a switch that indicates if the clutch lever is pulled in; part of an interlock that keeps the bike from starting in gear. Unless you want to do some custom work, which is entirely possible, you will want to re-use the XJ controls.

        Thanks, mro and Jerry...

Hmm, as tempting as it might seem I realling don't have the time to do that much customization but I'll look into the MAC's...

Any chance painting the chrome pipes black with high temp spraypaint will do the job for me effectively? The real question is will they look good or would it be more recommendable to have this done (powder coated paint) professionally? Anythoughts..

        Thanks again...

An online biker buddy of mine just mentioned that I could paint the chrome pipes with GM SATIN BLACK for a better finish than the heat temp paint and he also mentioned that ENGINE PAINT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE HIGH HEAT... Could this be a viable way to go?

          Thanks again...

            Hey Charlie,

It's difficult to get paint to stick to newly polished chrome, and seems a shame to ruin a nice finish. Engine paint doesn't have to be Hi-Temp when it's on the ENGINE, but when it's on the EXHAUST pipes which easily run 400+ degrees at the headers, then you'd be better off with hi-temp paint, less likely to bubble off!

But if you want BLACK headers, and you want them to last, then you might look into the link Guy posted to the Spaghetti Headers thread, the JET HOT coating process.

            You can't Powder coat exhausts!

But if you want to go quick and cheap, then painting the headers will probably work, would look into etching of some sort to get the paint to stick to the chrome!

There's a powder coat available that will stand up to 1200 degrees. Don't have the link right now but I did post it in another thread...
