  • Lighting problem help!

Hello could anyone help me out on my lighting problem?? First this a 81 MS 1100 parts bike I am restoring, not familiar with how these lights are supposed to work. So this is what I have so far all my 4 signal lights are working a like 6 volts, when I hit either the left or right turn signal the rear of the side I choose lights up to 12 volts but the front on the same side cuts out completely, and nothing blinks, my hazard lights don't work at all, as to my headlight. But I got my rear brake light to work from the hand and foot applicator.

    Tks
    Peter.

Sounds like bad grounds and low voltage. Is the bike running when you are working the T/S? You may need to hook up a battery charger when testing the T/S as they sometime need a little extra oomph to overcome the flasher. 2000rpm of engine speed will raise the voltage to 14v or so, and they may flash. The headlight won't come on until the engine is running, and the alternator is charging.

      Hey Peter,

Yes, check your grounds as has been suggested, especially in the headlight bucket, as well as the frame grounds.

The ER flashers have a separate flasher under the seat vs. the normal turn signal at the fuse panel. The TS fuse is a 20 amp, vs. only 10 for ignition and headlight and running lights!! So yes, it draws/needs more power to activate the flasher unit properly!

Also, check the switch housing, folks have found bad solder joints, loose wires, etc.! Keep at it!

        Lighting Problem

Tks for help, much appreciated I don't have the motor in the bike yet, and the voltage is like 11-12 volts when the lights are at full brightness. So the MS has running lights on all the time? Does anyone have any good working relays?? I have no idea if mine are any good or not.

        Tks
        Peter.

The MNS doesn't have running lights, but the headlight should be on any time the engine is running. You can bypass the relay by jumping the red/white and blue/black wires at the relay.
