  • horny problems...

well my bike did not have a horn when i bought it. someone had put a relay in there and tapped one of the horn plugs off and had it going to a light that used to be there. i took all that out and hooked up one of the horns from the xj11 and they don't work... i tried both while it was in the garage...

    1. does the horn work if the bike is not running? i didn't try to crank it in the garage...

    2. is the yellow one the ground and would it matter if i hooked them up backwards... i don't know if there is a seperate fuse somewhere for the horn but the fuses in the block are all good.

    any tips would be nice!
    thanks!!!

Don't forget to check the XJ horns off the bike first... If they've been "in storage" for any length of time they can "seize up.." A tweak on the adjusting screw at the back usually gets them farting away again....

The XS wiring harness (most models) has two spurs for the horns... Both come out of the harness near the ignition coils and both (should) end in a pair female spade terminals...

Each spur should have a pink and a brown cable. The brown is the live feed to the horn, the pink is the earth return... There is no relay in the OEM circuit, the feed comes direct from the fuse-box and the earth is via the push-button on the LHS handlebar switch...

The same fuse is used for the horns & the neutral/oil warning lamps, so if they're lit, your horn fuse is good (if you have original wiring..)

Most problems happen in the push button... try leaving the brown wire connected and earthing the other horn terminal...

    MIND YOUR EARS...!!!

      yamahansolo:

The horn button on the left hand side is just a method of grounding the P (PINK)wire to the horn. When the key is turned on battery is put across the horn leads The P lead runs up to the horn button and when depressed, places a frame ground which causes current to flow across the horn. If you look at the schematics, the battery is picked up on the Brown wire and flows through the Pink wire. If you use a meter, then 12 V is on the horn leads waiting for the button to be pushed.
