  • 1981 MNS Tach?

    Posting for a friend.

On his '81 MNS the tach has what appears to be a connection for a cable of some sort but there is nothing connected to it at this time. I believe this is in addition to the normal wiring that exits the tach and connects to the harness in the headlight bucket.

Is there a cable missing? Is there something different on the MNS tach's than on other XS eleven's.

      Hey Giant,

Like MRO said, the MNS is the same as all other XS's, it's ONLY electronic. IF it has a gear/cable connector like the speedo, then SOMEONE has swapped it out for one from another bike, ie. 750/850/650. They use mechanical drives. Only the XS11 uses the electronic type!

When you say "a connection for a cable of some sort" do you mean an electrical cable or a mechanical (speedo-like) cable..?

All XS 11 "Special" tachos should have the 3-pin electrical connector for the electronics in the tacho and a second connector (6 or 4 pin, depending on model) for the backlights and panel lights (lo fuel, hi beam, etc...) The "Std" models only have the 6-way which covers tacho, backlights and fuel gauge...

Thing is... If the tacho is a "mechanical" type, then it's for ornamental purposes only on an XS11... There isn't a drive take-off on the engine to spin it around...

Does the tacho actually work, or is trying to get it to work how you found the other "cable"..?

          Thanks Gents!

I suspect Topcat is right, it has the wrong tach. P.O. must have swapped it out.
