Oil temp should be about 250 to 300, above 325 is DANGER
Head temp will probably be 350 to 700, but this is just a guess. Oil temp I know, as I had a VDO oil temp gauge on my first XS1100.

On the welding aluminum bit....I once had a cast aluminum car transmission housing welded....they said the trouble with welding it was the oil that had soaked into it. Not sure if they preheated with a torch or what, but it never gave me any problems after they fixed it up. Work was done at a large proffesional machine shop.

Don't know what the head temp in an XS11 should be, but when I used to race Karts, I had a digital head temp monitor, and the guys who couldn't afford to rebuild their engines for every race weekend, (or have a spare motor at the track) ran temps around 350-375F.

The temp was taken from a sensor which replaced the spark plug washer/gasket.

The guys who could afford it rans temps around 450F but ran the risk of engine seizure or ruining a piston. The extra heat equaled extra power.

Of course that was with 2-stroke motors, but aluminum loses it's temper quickly above 450F.
