  • now were getting somewhere, (wiring)

ok a few weeks ago my wife wrote how im in this mess, with catching my dads 1980 xs 1100 mds on fire, but now im back on trying to fix it, i got a wiring harness but not sure if its a g, sg, or lg, but i think its a g wiring harness that will work, but i have a few ?s and im try to explain it the best i can, first the termal assemblily thats just below the fuse box, i know theres 2 wires that connect but to what pug in, and im guessin the wire behind the terminal assimbly is a ground?, second beside where the starter silanoid connects to the wiring harnnes there is a single male plug ( not the plastic connecter) not sure where it goes, does it connect to the wire that connnects to the starter, the wire from the starter to the silanoid has a single wire off of it, where does it go? lol im so excited, but trying not to hurry, thanks for any help

      Hey Jeremy,

Congrats on getting back into this project!

Pictures are worth a 1000 words, and can help us to be sure of what wires/plugs you're talking about.

In the lower left corner of the fuse panel, there is an AUX terminal which has 2 brass screws. These are for attaching accessories, so no wires connect to them at the screws unless you are adding a device. It's been several years since I modded my old fuse block and put in a new ATCO solid fuse holder, but I remember having to do some fancy wiring to run the power that ran thru that extra glass fuse and the terminals to run them THRU the new fuse block!

This probably doesn't answer your question, but hopefully you can get some photos of the wires/plugs in question, and we can better help you to figure it out.

Okay, great job, but I didn't know you hadn't put the harness on the bike's frame yet, but I can see you're trying to match up all the plugs before you do that!

I'm pretty sure that thin 3 wire plug is the fuel tank sensor, you should find a similar one on the tank's sending unit!

The large wire with the rubber protector caps on both ends looks like the one that goes from the solenoid to the starter motor.

The extra red wire near the solenoid, not sure, could be the extra HOT lead to the AUX term. of the fuseblock.

Also not sure about the other female bullet connector, can't tell what color it is, but I think you've got most of it figured out, so I would go ahead and install it, and THEN see if you don't find something on the frame that needs one. But they might just be extra lighting wires???

thanks for the help tomcat, i just wonder of that extra wire hot wire hooks into that little wire on the silaniod wired? but the only wire on the starter solenoid comes from the hot battery side, not to the starter. im gonna but it on today and let u get a good look where stuff is, and found out what that female block it for, its for the terminal assembly, well found a male block on a terminal assembly on ebay, so i think thats it , well here i go try this again
              thanks

Update, today i got the old one off and the new one on, but i have a few ?s one there are 2 ground wires close to the rectifier, now do these wires just bolt to the rectifier? two, the wires on the stator and the timing advance was both burnt up pretty bad, but close to the cases they are ok, do u think that i can just spice into the good spots and rewire with new wire? and three, the reserve lighting on the old wiring harness was melted well i have a reserve lighting from a xs 750 specail, same plugin but one number off one the part number, will this work?
                thanks for the help

On my 81 special there are two, two wire into eye connectors that are attached at the rear top rectifier mounting screw.

Should not hurt to splice the wires. Would twist em together, solder and place a piece of shink tube on em.

                  Don't know about the RLU.

You can bolt these 2 ground wires down anyplace they'll reach but one common place to mount them is with one of the reg/rec mounting screws.

I attached the ones on my bike to a spot further back on the frame but any place they will have a good and solid connection to the frame is fine.
