Well i should get the dumb S### award for this...this happened a few weeks back and I just didnt want to talk abt it ...til now...the day after i brought my Streetfighter home from Toledo,OH I was driving it around my 'hood on wet roads.I was having a problem with the rear brake caliper and it had locked up when I came to a Stop sign. When I went to take off I needed more throttle to break the hold of the rear brake..what happened was the rear broke the hold from the brake but then spun the tire on the wet road and the bike slid out from under me and slidd across the street grinding the right side engine guard(worthless)and bending it plus the Alt.cover is gouged and scratched...no other damage was done ...so...What can i do to fix this...replace the cover? It loks like that would be hard to find...what abt any metal repair?Pix ....

Sorry to hear that. Looks about like mine! Gives it character! Just sand down all the rough stuff and polish it....or find one on eBay.

Andreas could probably hook you up with one. He's a fantastic resource and one hell of an upstanding guy. andreashweiss is his handle.

Seriously, that damage is not that bad. There are people on here with worse looking XSes.

In my humble estimation, the damage looks minor and can be light sanded and polished out with mothers and a little elbow.

Its hard to see how deep the scratches and gouges are...since I am a perfectionist I will be looking for a replacement cover if at all possible....Thanks for all the suggestions I will try to sand it out and polish it up and see...

Well if you're a perfectionist then you'd better get a new one! The Mad Mosquito had been laid down in it's past life. It had damaged the bars, headlight, gauges, signal and the right cover like yours. On my cover I used a 3M blue Roloc (sanding) disc and my high speed die grinder. After that I polished it up and it looks fine....good enough for me anyway!

                  Hey Max,

The problem with replacing that cover is that it houses the charging system, and the 3 allen hex head bolts in the middle hold the inner field coils, and it is positioned to match the large metal rotor on the inside so that it doesn't make contact with it.

I don't know how the pro mechs do it, but it could be a little tricky to swap the parts and get them positioned properly. Also the coils are usually sold as part of the side cover, and IF your bike is charging properly now, you can't necessarily guarantee that you'll get a working one with the replacement?

As others have said, you'll probably be better off in trying to sand/polish it out. Good Luck.

                    Whoa...

                    Hi TC!
That is very interesting...a bit more complicated than I had thought...looks like plan B it is....You know between Madmax and the Streetfighter I have enough stuff that needs to be done to have a tech meet with some XSives somewhere on the EAST COAST?

Don't feel bad.....when I dropped mine it had no case guards. Ripped the timing cover off (it broke into several peices), destroyed the timing mechanism, and ruined all of the bolt mounting holes in the engine block. I had to fill the holes (and rebuild a decent portion of the cover mounting wall) with alumiweld, drill and retap. The bottom holes were unrepairable.

As Erik said, Andreas had all the parts I needed to get it running again. Was a big help!

Here's a rather blurry pic of the top of the cover:

I've since done a little more levelling and polishing, but it still looks like crap. The alumiweld's finish won't ever match the original block. Tis why I bought a spare motor....

ah yes a spare engine...nice to have.... I did kinda feel stupid that I let this one down on the street...the engine guards did take some of the damage away from the engine but it still did not prevent the engine from road rashing. The tip over wings that i have on my '95 Honda ST1100 completely protect the bike when its on its side(s)...BTDT....I low sided and banged my low back on the street...been sore for weeks but staring to ease up LOL....that is my first get off on a streetbike in 32 years of riding...albeit it was a low speed get off...also rashed up the right knee a little bit...was not riding with any gear...other than boots, gloves and regular street clothes...no using helmet either..DUH

The type of case guards you are using, are (as your found out) not very strong. To protect your investment (new cover) track down a pair of 3 mount case guards. My Dad slid for over 200 ft on his 3 mount guards and was able to ride home with no damage to his case. The guard was trashed. It ground 80% of it away.
