  • Voltage Regulator Missing Wire... what gives?

So I was troubleshooting a weak charging system this evening and I was going to perform some checks on the voltage regulator when I found what seems to be a wire missing from the 3-pin connector coming off the regulator (regulator side of the connection). I've posted some photos here so you can have a look at what I'm talking about.

Is this normal? I suspect not... but the regulator doesn't appear to have any other leads coming out of it that would go to this connector... so what gives? Would this be the cause of a weak charging system?

    Patrick,

That is normal. The regulator field coil only needs two wires, green and brown. The black is a ground lead. The body of the regulator gets it's ground at the frame mount, that ring connector on the body of the regulator in the left of photo 1467. You should clean the ring connector, the body of the regulator at the ring connector and all of the connections at each plug. There are also connections behind the fuse panel that should be cleaned.

Dielectric grease on the connectors will help prevent future corrosion.
