    switchgear paint

My bike needs some attention. I expect to do a master cylinder rebuild and also replace the tach and speedo. I have new switchgear labels as well.

To make this stuff look right when I'm done fixing it, it will need black paint. What color is correct? I plan to use a spray bomb as I don't have an airbrush.

I've found that clear lacquer over flat black looks about right.

      Hey Marty,

      Happy B'day by the way!!!!

Recent thread and product review about engine clear coat, might want to do a test on some of the extra lable piece, to ensure that the plastic won't melt or such when you spray the clear coat over it?? The clear coat will make a flat black paint look glossy.

        Thanx for the wish.

I'm looking for a satin finish. They are available. I hope someone here knows which one is closs to the original finish.

Good idea Top Cat, I was thinking only of the switch housings, master cyl. body and related aluminum parts. The paint combination I have used produced a satin finish much like the original, but differences in paint brands may cause different results so try it on a buddies bike first.

I posted the question on another forum and got the following answers:
SEM brand trim black. It works and looks good as well.
This has worked well for me. Painter's Touch by Rust-Oleum, Semi-Gloss
Black, Number 1974. I have it in a half pint can, and brush it on small
parts like the master cylinder. It is also available in a spray can, same
number and name. That stuff and some of Uncle Don Sundby's new labels will
make a handle bar switch look brand new.

Just did mine with Tremclad semi-gloss black in the spray can. They look really good! Can't wait for my new labels to arrive.

"donebysunday" is active on one of the XS650 email lists. I bought labels from him and provided photos of my XS-Eleven so he can make labels for those.
