Hey Ross if your engine parts are oxidized try spraying them with white vinegar and scrub with a toothbrush, rinse with water. Works great.

wingnut.....thanx 4 the advice....i understand using the white vinegar as a mild acid bath would help....god know what she went thru b4 i got her.....will this harm the seals/gaskets in any way....also, should i be careful about getting it on painted surfaces....thanx in advance...ross

I used it on the last 650 that I did and it worked out real well on the cylinders and head. Lactic acid is very mild and rinses off very easy. The main cases are painted and it did not hurt them at all. For the removable parts nothing beats a good buffing wheel on your bench grinder and some rouge. Both can be gotten at Lowe's or Home depot. There is an active thread on the site right now on a Duplacolor clear coat for the parts that do not see 500 degrees that I plan to try out next time. The vinegar will not hurt the seals or rubber parts. Have fun cleaning her up. Oh, where are the pictures!

                              oops

ok my bad...so, you did not do a restoration on this bike...that is even more rare ...to find a bike that doesn't need anything other than some carb work and a cleanup..notheless proud to own.In this day and age it is increasingly more difficult to find bikes of this vintage unrestored but looking like they have been completely redone...I have managed to find a original, unrestored excellent condition '81XS1100SH see pic...(ad nausem)
