  • Roll Bar / Engine Guard

This may be a dumb question but, I am not familiar with the frame set-up, in particular, any changes that may have occurred from one year to the next.
    Question: would a roll bar/engine guard specified for a 1978 XS1100 E fit on a 1980 XS1100 G - both being 'standards' ?

Surely you're not planning on rolling or crashing your newest ride are you?

When I used to park and wrench in an old barn, those bars saved my pretty covers when I dropped it while trying to muscel the beast around.

                Hey xsilerating

Are they the bars on ebay? If so I bought a set from the same guy last week and let me tell you they are perfect, no shelf marks, no rust anywhere, and he packs and ships straight away.

                And now the bad news...

If you have a frame mounted fairing they wont fit and if you have a factory oil cooler you have to get a bit creative.

Looks like the old parts bike has scored a new set of drop bars. Just one more reason to start restoring it.

I have a frame mounted fairing and a oil cooler and didn't have any problems with engine guards . When my bike was blown over the guard took the hit first ,cushioned the fall and saved my fairing from serious damage too.

Yeah tinman but these bars are one piece that attatch at the motor mounts and thread in front of the frame where they attach with U bolts. If you have a frame mounted fairing bracket, you can't secure the top of the bars. I have bars on my bike but not the ones specifically made for the 78E

I bought the new bars because they were cheaper than having my existing bars re chromed. They will fit a naked bike though and my parts bike is sooooo naked.

These are the bars made for the 78E

                    Big difference.

                    Dan.

I've tested the 3 point mounted case guards several times that were on the 80G. No good pics of those.
Can see em on the Mirriam some.

No problems with fairings or cooler.
The three point ones are the best way to go if you can get em.

                        Love shiney

The three point ones are all over the place on ebay etc, it's the ones made for the 78E that are hard to come by. Just a lesson for those like me with a dressed '78, the three point ones are the ONLY way to go.

Your bike is a thing of beauty mro.

Thanks Dan; If you are referring to the bars that you have pictured in your response to tinman then, 'yes' those are the ones. Unfortunately (I think) , I did not get them.
If, in fact, they won't fit on a bike with a frame mounted fairing, then it wouldn't do me much good anyway, as my '80 G/Standard, is fully dressed including a frame mounted Pacifico fairing and, my 80 LG/Midnight Special, will (in all likelihood) soon have a frame mounted Pacifico fairing as well (though, that is subject to change).
Note, as well, both bikes have engine guards on them... the minimum protection that I wouldn't be without.

Good luck restoring your 'parts' bike, just hope you didn't pilfer too many parts from it.

                          Ron
