    79 xs1100f , i am having problems with the fuel gauge to work, replaced the wiring,put a another harness inside the gauge, possible it could be the sending unit, theses are hard to find, any ideas on what to do about this problem, thanks mike s.

    Could be one of three things: the sender in the tank, the regulator in the tach, or the guage needle movement itself.

    Check the sender: Key off, Ohm meter on low (200 ohms) scale, unplug sender, attach meter to sender, shake tank, should see variation as float bobs up and down. If sender OK, check regulator.

    Check regulator: Key on, meter on dc volts, (12V), unplug sender, attach meter to harness side of sender connector, should read 7 volts, anything else and regulator is bad. If regulator OK, check guage.

    Check guage: Key on, unplug sender, attach hi-wattage 10 Ohm resistor to harness side of sender connector. Guage should deflect, if no action, guage is bad.

    Just for reference, sender resistance relative to guage reading is:

    Full = 6 to 10 Ohms

    Half = 28 to 36 Ohms

    Empty = 75 to 85 Ohms

      If you find out that it is the fuel sender, see: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...el+Tank+Sender[/url]
