oh - ok. If I strip mine down (they're out of the tank at the moment while it gets sprayed) will I screw anything up, is there any test I can do to see if they are ok before pulling them apart?

To test em off the tank...
need to hook em to a fuel supply to see if they leak.
them apply vacuum to vac port (attach hose and suck on it )
to see flow. Turn to prime and check that flow, then switch back to "on" and it should not leak a drop w/o vacuum.

Taking em apart should not hurt.
Would not take out the o-ring (goes around selector) unless replacing. The rubber gasket (between petcock/tank) likes to get flattened so I use some high quality non harding gasket goop on both sides.
Face of selector is supposed to be smooth and has channels for fuel to flow. I polish it some as it gets oxidized/rough.
There be a tiny hole in the rubber diaphram and in the petcock which should be lined up. Be sure hole is clear as it allows air in to the back side of diaphram so it can return to shut off fuel when vacuum absent.

BTW, should you get a kit, be aware that the o-ring is not a regular round type o-ring and has "square edges". Install with the high side in. Should know what I mean if you get it.
