  • Starting of a project

    G'day all,
About a week ago I got my hands on a 1981 XS1100 Standard which has sort of seen better days, but seemed to be a perfect project for my out of work time.
In that week waiting for the bike to arrive I found this site, and I have to say, there is a truckload of information and people who know these bikes here. Looks like my resto project might use a little less guesswork than I thought I was going to have to use.

I've actually decided to do a blog up on this project, mainly just to record my own worklog and keep track of what I've gotten done, but there's photos on there if you'd like to see the bike itself. The link is http://2wheelproject.blogspot.com/

After all that, I do have a technical question. The tachometer is displaying 1000rpm even when there's no power on the bike, is this something that could be adjusted inside the tacho itself?
    Current playthings:

1981 Yamaha XS1100H - 1179cc Wiseco bore kit, 36mm ZRX1200 carburetors, damn thing has been completely rebuilt from the frame up. Yep, its been a long time coming.
1988 Yamaha XT600 Tenere - She'll go just about anywhere!
1986 Yamaha FJ1200 - The previous tourer, replaced by the XS11. Someone had to go.
1974 Chrysler Valiant Charger - Because you can't only have 2 wheeled toys draining the cash.

    Welcome to XSland hobbsy
There be a few aussy members here too.
Your 1.1 looks like it got to sit outside for a while but looks like all the parts are there...

BTW, I've yet to have to take a tach apart so don't know.
Have you got the bike started yet?

The bike's battery was dead when I got it, but after using a jump starter to get power on, all the electricals (much to my surprise) were working, and the bike started quite nicely. That is of course after the carbies got a well deserved clean-up, two of them were frozen solid.
So, the tach works, but still displays 1000rpm when it's off. Displaying a 2000rpm idle, but I'll eat my hat if it's idling at that, sounds like it's around 1000 like it should be.

I have taken the Tach apart, its hard to make it look good after it’s a part as you have to bend off the ring that holds the glass on to get inside and they never bend back perfectly.

Likely a bug has crawled in there and jammed itself in the meter armature before it died.

Try a little (very little) compressed air in one of the bulb sockets to see if it will loosen up.

          Good Luck

Hmm, a bit of air in the bulb hole moved it back a little, but I guess only time is going to tell if it just goes straight back to where it was or is fixed. I'll have to wait till the engine is running again. Here's hoping. Cheers.
