    "What's the big deal?"

I thought you said you had a big fire?
Ignition module: Could just be surface bubbling. May still function. Easy to test after fixin' a few other things.
Wiring harness: Get thee to a parts store or radio schack and pick up some electrical connectors(also some wire) As Wa407mpp stated, it looks mostly like just the wrapping burned. Remove the wrapping and check the wires. Repace the sections that have the insulation burnt off(or just insulate with electrical tape) For the burnt connectors, just splice in the individual connectors that you will buy. This isn't that hard... much easier than replacing the harness. What till next winter to replace the harness if you feel that you must. Lets just get it running first.
Left grip assy: Just surface melt(and ugly), should still function.
Right grip assy: Can't see it to well. Probably in the same shape as the left electrically. If the throttle grip still turns, it'll be ok for now.
    Airbox you'll obviously need.
As for the carbs: Pull them, and remove the vacuum diaphram covers(the round plates on the top) Need to check that the rubber diaphram hasn't been damaged.

Carbs need to be cleaned and have the float needles replaced. That's why you flooded and burned. Clean the seat(where the float needles seal) with a light abrasive(I recommend a chrome cleaner, like simichrome(sp) and many Q tips.(remove the seats as there may be debris screens underneath them)
Once the wiring has been taken care of, you should be able to crank the engine and check if there's spark at the plugs. If you've done everything correctly, there should be. This is the test to see if the ignition module still works.
Once you've done all this, write back with your results and we can take it from there.

Hard for me to keep taking my meds, MRO, when everyone around me keeps taking them for their own recreation. The only prescription drug I have left now is Rogaine, and as the pic shows, it did wonders for my thinning hairline.

      Prom covers it pretty good.

Carb kits are resonable at mikesxs.com
      gasket/needle/seat etc...
(will be the ones for BS34 carbs)
Also has grips and goodies for the handle bars.
      ---
Vacuum diaphrams are still available but are pricey.
      Hope they survived the BBQ...

If you do need to replace some wires...do just one at a time.
      Same with any wire connectors.

The only other issue that the wire insulation burning may have caused is when the then bared wires touched causing a short circuit - never a good thing. However so called delicate electronic parts can be suprisingly hardy and you might be lucky. The really bad news is you aren't going to know until you've carried out the repairs already mentioned and give it a try!
I have just pulled the air box off mine and am going to pods so if you can't find another one and don't mind paying shipping from Canada you can have it.

Thank you Moderator KT for fixing the pictures for me! I guess I didnt have it figure out!

Anyway, my husband had started to peice it back together, but around the fuse box and up was charred so bad, he couldnt tell where the wires went to, so he was guessing. I let him know about the wiring diagrahmn on this site, so, he's going to check it out later, after watching the Canadian motocross race on TV. After he has a look at that, maybe he'll have a better idea of what to do.

mro, nice pics. Prom, you're pretty! And the fire WAS big! It was as high as the roof of my house! That's all I remember, but I guess it wasnt burning as long as we thought it was. I'll blame that on the surprise of the situation. And when I was taking the pictures, I thought the same thing, it didnt look as bad as I initally thought. I do beleive that we CAN get it running again, after talking with you guys! You have already been such a great help. Now that you gave us hope (and help) again, and we know that it can be done, but we will probably need your help still!

Looks like I have a long web search to conduct, and hubby has some tinkering to do, so I'll get back to you guys again, alittle later.

By the way how long can these threads get?

            Hey Chasey,

Your photos were fine, it's just that PhotoDump changed their protocal and don't allow direct linking to the full size photos on their servers anymore! What you end up seeing on this site in the messages are the thumbnails, and then when folks click on it, they get to see the full size photos.

But as KT stated, Photobucket still allows direct linking of the photos, so that's why he and many others have gone to them instead of photodump.....sorry, I should update that tech tip!

These threads can be many to tens of pages long! Once you get into the other aspects of the repairs, then you can create new threads like for the carbs, another one for the electrical stuff, etc.!

BTW, MikesXS.com has many of the parts you'll need, like grips, mirrors, even the wire connectors, as well as the carb parts. Ebay will be better for a replacement set of controls switches, unless he wants some BLING, then Mikes has some nice fully chrome ones!

I resell a replacement fuseblock, a simple 6 slotted ATC style fuse holder that can be used to replace the plastic and glass fuse holder!
Keep at it, we're here for you!

I have been visiting some of the parts links throughout XS11.com, and have found soem useful sites.

Now MikeXS.com has wiring harnesses, but the name says Yamaha XS650, will any of those work on a 1980 XS1100LG?

Sorry but MikesXS is solely 650 parts, you have to know which ones will work on the XS11, and "THEY" won't help you if you ask them, cause they don't know!!

But, no, the wiring harness for the 650 will not work on the 11!

I have always, watch my husband work on our dirtbikes, ATVs, etc, and sometimes, with help I would work on parts while he worked on other parts. I know a little bit, but not anything important...or useful...LOL . I am trying though! I can only do so much though, most of the work is up to him! I think it'll run again!
As soon as it's running, we'll have to paint it again, so I'll post pics of her being put back together. I think everyone would like that.

Looking at the pics, doesn't look that bad.
When working on wires or uplugging connectors, I use small pieces of tape on each wire. One on each side of the wire/connector before cutting or unplugging. Then a number on each piece of tape.
When it's time for reassembly, match up the numbers. If it was right before, it'll be right agian.
AS far as MikeXS, I've delt with them on a few projects and when you mention XS1100, they kinda frown and really don't want to deal with you. So, as stated above, Know what you want if you order from them.
Looks like you solved the "small tank" problem for the Special. Should be able to get a few more miles per tank..
I'd keep an eye on Ebay.
Like prom stated. Before working on the cosmetics,, Lets get er runnin first. Worry about the air box, but not so much just to get her runnin. Ya don't need the air box to fire it up but would not recommend takin it out of the garage without one. ( Gunk, dirt, water, birds, and so on ) as well as the carbs,( when you get them done ) need the little bit of air restriction to run right. Unless they're jetted for pods.
                      Good luck on the build.

Ok, now I cant find the wiring diagrahm for the XS1100LG...is the wiring on the SG and LG pretty close? My husband said he's not really sure about all the wires in and around the fuse box/battery where the worst damage was. He tried to work on it after the fire, but got frustrated, and now he doesnt know what goes where.

Fire-Been there done that... I didn't cause the fire but the PO did. If you need help with where all the wires go and plug into, just ask for some photos of other bikes. It doesn't look to bad but it will take some time to fix. That's where patience comes in. It takes time to restore these bikes even if they haven't caught on fire. When I got my burned 1980G model, It was rusted in many places. I pulled everything off the frame except the engine. I spent a lot of time removing plastic from the frame and engine. I Then slowly started testing electrical parts and putting them back on. I did have to get a new harness. Some carb and break kits went a long way to getting it back on the road. As for parts and such, there is aways eBay and bikebandit, partsnmore, mikesxs, and a few others. From my personal experience, the dealer has the highest prices for OEM parts out of the catalogue

                                Welcome to the site!

As you've already found out, lots of great info here and very helpful people... for the most part... have to watch out for a couple of them though...

Not certain how the ignition module came though the fire but it was looking a little bubbly... If you find that it needs to be replaced... make certain you get the correct model...

There were 2 made for the XS... the 78 - 80 models use the 2H7 and the 81 use the 4R0... It does make a difference...

If you haven't already, check the "parts for sale" forum... Andreas usually has a pretty decent assortment of parts and has really good prices for them... or you can post the parts you need in the "wanted to buy" forum... Some of us packrat parts for our own bikes but might be willing to part with some parts...

Ahem... mro... lucky for you I took my meds today...
