  • exhaust head pipes compatibility

    Hello All!

Looking at a set of head pipes apparently off a '79 XS1100.

Wondering if they would fit my '81 XS11 Special?

Both my left and right side broke clean through under the heat shield.

BTW...would those be able to be re-welded?

    Thanks in advance!!

All the XS/XJ 1100's take the same exhaust.

      Not quite true...
      headers be pretty much same.
Colletors, cross overs, muffs, and mounts be different.
Not only between special/standard but can be different between years too.
But can make any XS XShaust work on any XS/XJ.

XShaust header studs/flange can vary some also

the pipes coming off the motor are what I am most concerned about. Everything else I am going to switch out to what I am running currently, i.e. stock mufflers

Never worked on the exhaust before, but it doesn't look too complicated.

Just can't believe my luck to have both pipes break off (at different times, but same season) Go Figure!

Where they are broke is NOT unuaual at all........and yes, that is an easy area to weld back up. Just tack them together in bout three spots before removing pipes. Remove and weld all the way around and paint with high-temp silver from Napa. Won't dis-color or rust........works very well! If heat shields are still in place, you may want to put some Kroil around the shield mounting bolts before removing, as they get rusted in after several years and you may twist and break them off.

Yeah, I will try that on the other side

Already busted off a bolt on the left heat shield and looks like another was already missing

Any ideas on what I should be willing to pay for a decent set of original head pipes? All used, they come with an inexpensive aftermarket muffler, but I intend to put my stock ones back on.

Easy fix for broken off bolt for heat shield: Dremal with cut-off wheel, cut spot welds on the base piece/nut, spot weld in couple places a new 6mm nut and put in new very short bolt, both can be had at True-Value or Ace hardware in thier specialty trays. As for head pipes, check ebay, as there are a couple sets on there now, just type in yamaha xs1100 for motorcycle parts. What you'll pay is realative to how bad you need them.
