  • Any caution rebuilding F Model Brakes?

    XSives

Are there any special cautions to observe when rebuilding a 1979 F Standard Model's front brake master cylinder? Just received new front master cylinder rebuild kit from Mike's XS.

I read the posts about using the correct type of snap ring pliers and a new container of DOT brake fluid etc.
Have rebuilt automotive wheel cylinders prior & bled them without incident.

You may need to remove the reservior from the M/C in order to access the 'Spooge" hole to clean it out. It is very small, so a fine strand of wire will be needed to poke through it. One tip for bleeding... Once the system is full of fresh fluid, and you feel it is bled, but the system still feels like it needs bleeding, remove one of the front calipers from it's mount, and support it from hanging on the hose. With help of an assistant, remove the M/C from the handlebars, and tip it so the lever is pointing up, and have him hold it there. Using a C clamp, compress the caliper piston back into the caliper. That will force the air bubble that is trapped in the banjo bolt at the M/C into the reservior and out of the system.
When you remove the brake light switch from the M/C, look under the hole where the switch is plugged in. There is a hole there that you will ned to insert a screwdriver into to unlock the tab that holds the switch in place. You will see it when you look for it.

Just the standard one about keeping brake fluid off of your paint. Use lots of shop rags.
