"extra steel"
This be an "easy" mod...
place an extra steel plate in the center of the clutch pack.
makes up for any wear in the basket and there is some "slop" in the origianal clutch pack.
Should you use after market new frictions and steel is still in spec.,
can still add the the extra plate.
Do not need an "extra steel" should you use Barnet friction discs.
They be plenty graby all by themselvs
With Barnets...wheelies be easy thru third gear
...but can break the ckutch basket being that EXsive.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. Do it right, do it once. For the price of a new set of frictions on ebay, get heavy springs, get new frictions, AND do the extra steel. I had a slipping clutch... so i pulled the whole thing and did the clutch refurb (sanding, added heavy springs, etc.). Worked for a week and started slipping again. So, pulled it again and added a extra steel plate. Worked for 2 months and started slipping again. Before you think it, I was using moto oil and all the plates wer withing spec. Finally, I pulled it AGAIN and added new frictions. Been good for over a year now . Learned my lesson. DO IT ONCE!'81 XS1100 SH

Hey Brian,
Sorry, but it's actually in the REPAIRS/Engine section since it was showing how to R&R the clutch basket/plates, and just added the extra steel info along with it!
